    Directions For Questions

Tinota, a leading car manufacturing company is in a fix on how to go about an issue that has recently surfaced. Tinota sold around 120000 cars of its popular V4 car this year. They realized that their fuel system had properties that attracted yellow spac spiders, a kind of insect, to build their nests in a part of the fuel system. These spiders weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line and this may cause a restriction of the vent line. The evaporative canister vent line runs from a charcoal-filled canister that cleans air coming out of the gas tank. Blockage of the line can prevent air from getting into the gas tank as the gasoline is used resulting in negative air pressure inside the tank. That can lead to a crack in the gas tank with the possibility of a fire. There have been 20 reported cases of spider infestation in the V4 cars. However, no actual fires are known to have been caused by the spiders.

The team at Rolvo, a competitor of Tinota, learns about the yellow spac spider infestation story. On deeper study, it showed that their yet to be launched model of Glitz, a sedan, also uses the same kind of fuel system that V4 does. The Rolvo team had aggressively marketed the launch of Glitz and allowed customers to pre-book their cars six months before the actual launch. There were only four days remaining before the first batch of Glitz gets delivered but the team knows that it would take about 25 days for their research team find a solution. Thousands of customers had pre-ordered the car by paying 15% of the car price. In such a scenario, where Rolvo had aggressively marketed their car and the launch date, delaying of the car will cause some damage to the brand. What should Rolvo do?

    Solution

Option A is an extreme step and should be avoided when a solution can be figured out.

Option B: is not an ethical action on the part of Rolvo as they are doing nothing about a safety issue that they are aware of. Moreover, delivering and recalling immediately does not make sense.

Option C: This is the correct answer. As an ethical company, ROlvo should keep the safety of its cars and its customers as its top foremost priority. Hence apologizing to the customer about a delay and giving them an option to withdraw the order will ensure there are not too many unhappy customers and providing an incentive for the delay can keep the current customers happy.

Option D is not right as you cannot allow a customer to decide the safety of your car. Customers are not completely aware of the dangers. Hence it is the responsibility of the company to make a decision. And it is also unethical to continue to sell a product that you are aware has a safety problem.

Option E: is not correct as one can never be sure when an accident can happen. Here Rolvo is trying to hide the issue and solve it without anyone knowing about it but the assumption being made here is that nothing can happen within the first 30 days and that all cars are going to come in for a service. And like in other options, it is unethical to sell a product that is not safe.

  • Question 2
    4 / -1

Prakash has been working with his team for a long time now. One of his subordinates, Anil is a very hard working man and good at his job. He can take responsibility and get things done. Ms Geeta, who is working under Anil, comes up to Prakash with a worried look on her face. She complains to Prakash that Anil has been making undue advances towards her and had even asked her out for dinner. Prakash had previously noticed this flirtatious behavior but ignored it assuming it was colleagues engaging in a bit of playful banter.

But Geeta now wishes to give a written complaint seeking action against Anil. What would be the right thing for Prakash to do in this situation?

    Solution

We need to choose the best action among the options given. Here, option b is the best choice.

Option a: Can appear correct. The passage clearly mentions that Prakash had known and seen this behavior and hence he may not need any investigation.

Option b is better as the HR cell handles such issues in any case and Prakash can let the cell handle the issue.

Option c is not correct as Prakash is advocating the problem to be swept under the carpet and requesting Geeta to work under conditions which she does not find professional.

Option d is an extreme step and should be avoided as this is not a crime but possibly an issue that can be resolved by the company’s internal divisions which handle this

Option e is also an extreme step. On one hand, Prakash finds Anil a very good professional resource but on the other hand he is aware that the behavior is not correct especially if it is bothering Geeta. Hence he should allow the appropriate HR cell to deal with the issue as they are best equipped to deal with such cases in the right manner. Hence option b.

  • Question 3

Vidya Devalaya education Institute has announced the final exam schedule. The exam is conducted over a period of 15 days for five exams with 2-3 days between each exam. After a few days of the announcement, The Election Commission of India announces the dates of the upcoming elections. The Principal of the school is now worried that the election dates announced clash with the exam timetable of the school. A couple of the exams take place on the same day as that of the elections. What should be done by the Principal in this situation?

    Solution

Option a is not feasible. The Principal does not have control over the elections to decide a government and hence this option does not make sense. Moreover, the Elections for a large population cannot be cannot be changed in lieu of the examinations of a school

Option b: is not viable as cancelling the exam would mean - the exams that clash will not be conducted - Definitely not the best solution.

Option c & d both are viable options but option d is more logical and efficient as there is no need to postpone all exams when postponing only the ones that have a conflict of dates can be moved.

Option e is an extreme option which will get no desired result.

  • Question 4

It has been a hot summer’s day in Mumbai. Ashvin is waiting for a bus that will take him home. He notices a small ice cream kiosk near the bus stop and decides to treat himself to an ice-cream. While enjoying his ice-cream, he notices a young lady crossing the street to reach the same bus stop where he is waiting. At the same time, a person on a bike riding carelessly and above the area’s speed-limit, collides with the lady. The lady takes a heavy fall on the head and is severely injured. The impact also causes the biker to fall off the bike but he quickly notices what he had done and tries to flee.

Ashvin who witnesses this accident notices the biker trying to flee the accident spot. What should be his next course of action?

    Solution

The objective in such a situation when someone is hurt or one’s life is in danger should take precedence over all other actions.

Option A: is not the best course of action as Ashvin’s immediate objective should be to ensure the lady is attended to and receives medical help.

Option B: This is the best option. In such emergencies, emphasis should be given to life over anything else.

Option C: is a not a good Option As the immediate need is to help the lady. You are not sure if they people you are requesting will actually do what you asked them to.

Option D: For reasons mentioned in ‘a’, this is not the best course of action.

Option E: Again, the objective here is to help the lady whose life is probably in danger which is more important than punishing the guilty or the trivial issue of medical expenses

The head of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is faced with a dilemma, when he receives a letter from a devotee of the Chalukyanath Temple. The content of the letter is as below,

    Dear ASI chief,

The Seer of the famous Chalukyanath temple in Sidigudi dreamt about the existence of 1000 tonnes of gold underneath a fort of then King RajaRam, located just behind Chalukyanath Temple. The temple is known for miracles and fulfilling the wishes of devotees. Thousands of devotees visit the temple every day and seek blessings from the Seer of the temple, including myself. People of the area are hoping for the development of the area in terms of better infrastructure, healthcare, transportation etc. if we are able to find this gold underneath the fort. So I request your team to the excavate the site and find this gold as soon as possible.

What is the right thing for the ASI chief to do in this situation?

    Solution

As the Chief of the ASI, which is a scientific organization, most of his decisions must be based on science and credible information than something as frivolous as a dream. Hence, unless more data is available, the ASI chief should not ponder too much over the issue. While Option B might also appear a valid answer, in this case it is not as there is absolutely no credible information to initiate any action that would deploy the time and resources of the GSI and the ASI.

In most decision making questions, not doing anything is generally not a good solution when a problem is known. However, in this scenario, there is no credible problem/issue but an issue/problem/opportunity has been created out of a dream.

Anusha is a newly recruited manager at Lynfosys. She has replaced a manager who was handling a team of four engineers. Her first project is a time-bound project for a large new client. During the project review meetings, Anusha notices that the project is likely to get delayed due to lack of cooperation of the four engineers in meeting the timelines and adhering to project guidelines. What should her next course of action be

    Solution

The main points in the passage are that there is a time bound project that Anusha needs to complete on time and that the people reporting to her are not cooperating in getting the work done.

Option a: This might seem like the correct one but is not the best one among the options. Warning the team members will not completely ensure cooperation.

Option b: To ensure that the team functions well, it is necessary that Anusha figures out the reasons for non-cooperation before any course of action can be taken. Based on the causes, she can take necessary actions to achieve the objective of the project.

Option c: is extreme and even if done, it takes time. Hence does not help the project timelines in anyway.

Option d: is not the correct business decision as it is clearly stated that the project is time bound.

Option e: Like in option c, it is extreme and does not make too much sense in the absence of more information.

  • Question 7

Rahul is in-charge of implementing a Family Planning programme in a rural area where there is a strong opposition to the present policy. He wants to convince the residents of the need for keeping small families and its advantages. The residents are suspicious of his intentions and as a result have shown a complete disinclination towards adopting the ideas. If you were Rahul, what would be the best way of communicating this message?

    Solution

The objective for Rahul here is to communicate the benefits of Family Planning and to have families in rural areas understand its benefits. However, the problem is that families do not trust the messenger – Rahul- and his intentions, and are suspicious about the same.

Options a, b, c, & e will not work as the residents are distrustful of Rahul and because they are protesting his programme, it is unlikely that anything he now says will help.

Hence, the best option is d where you have other residents who have benefitted from the programme directly speak with residents as the credibility of the messenger in this case might be higher among the residents and is more likely to be accepted/heard.

  • Question 8

You are competing with a few of your classmates for a prestigious award to be decided based on an oral presentation. Five minutes are allowed for each presentation. You have been asked by the committee to finish on time. Your friend, however, is allowed more than the stipulated time period. What would you do?

    Solution

Here you feel aggrieved by the fact that the same rules were not applied to other as was applied to you. Hence, there is a feeling of a treatment of unfairness that meted out to you and the other classmates. You want the judging to be fair.

In this scenario, given that the rules clearly mentioned a five minute time limit and that that you were asked to strictly adhere to it, you can lodge a complaint against discrimination or unfair treatment.

The other options – b,c,d do not help in trying to solve the problem of the judges being unfair and you being treated fairly.

Option e is a little extreme to proclaim that corrupt intentions were behind the resulting actions. Hence Option a is a better option.

  • Question 9

Ram & Lakhan have been the best of friends since childhood. They share everything with each other. They are in the 12th Standard and have been preparing for their board exams together. On the day of the exam, Ram is seated two rows behind Lakhan. While writing the exam, Ram notices that Lakhan is copying and cheating on the exam. If you were Ram, what would you do in such a situation?

    Solution

The issue facing Ram here is that Lakhan is his best friend who is indulging in something that is not ethical.

Option A is not feasible as you cannot walk upto Lakhan in an examination setting, where communication is not allowed, and advise him without letting others know that Lakhan was cheating.

Option B Ignoring is never a good option when you have seen something not ethical happenin

Option C This is the best option for Ram as it serves the dual purpose of not putting his friend into any trouble while also ensuring he does not do anything unethical again

Option D: Because Lakhan is such a close friend of Ram, this is not an appropriate step to take.

Option E: is wrong as it is indulging in an unethical act.

  • Question 10

Direction: Study the information given below carefully and answer the question that follows.

In a new study by the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), researchers explored how caffeine can serve as a “mild antidepressant”. They concluded that “drinking several cups of coffee daily appears to reduce the risk of suicide”. Data pulled in from three large studies in the US showed that the suicide risk of those who drank two to four cups of caffeinated coffee a day was about half of those who drank decaffeinated coffee or very little or no coffee. In the studies, are respondents' caffeine consumption was assessed every four years through a questionnaire. Their respondents were all adults, and the study was published online. The authors, however, cautioned the public from increasing coffee intake as it could result in “unpleasant side effects”. “Overall, our results suggest that there is little further benefit for consumption above two to three cups/day or 400 mg of caffeine/day,” wrote the researchers. The authors observed that there` was no major difference in suicide risk for adults who drank two to three cups a day from those who drank four cups or more.

Which of the following shaped graph would best capture the above paragraph(x-axis represents“ coffee intake” and “Y-axis represents “suicide tendency”)?

    Solution

The risk of those who drank 2 to 4 cups of coffee was about half of those who drank almost no coffee. Therefore, the graph would be a straight line from 2 to 4, and it is falling to half its value from 0 cups.

Therefore, it will look closest to an L-shaped curve.
