NTA has updated the NEET 2022 tie-breaking rules to combat a situation of a tie among candidates. Check out the revised NEET 2022 Tie-breaker policy here to clear all confusion and prepare for the NEET exam accordingly.
The National Testing Agency has made certain changes in the NEET 2022 tie-breaking policy. In addition to the existing three factors, NTA has introduced six more factors, which will be applicable during a tie-breaking situation.
NEET Study Materials 2022-23
The tie-breaking policy for 2022 has been designed to shortlist and rank applicants based on their performance and basic eligibility. The medical field has been one of the most sought-after disciplines in India, therefore, many MBBS, BDS and other medical course aspirants will take their chance at clearing the exam.
Due to the huge number of applicants and competition, there might be situations where two or more candidates score the same marks. In such cases, determining their ranks will be crucial. For this reason, the NTA has devised a tie-breaker policy that will allow all applicants to be fairly ranked and shortlisted for admissions. Find out all the details of the policy here.
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Explained
The three different policies that were put in action as per the rules and regulations of NTA till last year are explained below:
Policy Statement 1
Candidates who have obtained a higher score in NEET Biology will be considered first, over the other candidates.
For Example, let’s consider the contents given in the table below:
Candidate | Marks Obtained in NEET Biology |
A | 265 |
B | 300 |
C | 245 |
As per the first policy and the contents mentioned above, Candidate B will be given preference over Candidates A and C. However, Candidate A will be given preference over Candidate C due to the marks obtained by the respective candidates.
This policy dictates that the candidate with the highest marks under the Biology section of the entrance exam will be ranked higher than the others. However, if all candidates have secured the same score in the section, Policy Statement 2 will be enforced.
Policy Statement 2
Candidates with a higher score in Chemistry will be ranked higher than others. Let’s take the example of Candidates A, B and C as per the information provided below.
Candidate | Marks Obtained in NEET Biology | Marks Obtained in NEET Chemistry |
A | 300 | 135 |
B | 300 | 156 |
C | 296 | 160 |
In the instance mentioned above, Candidate B will be given preference over Candidates A and C, as Candidate B has secured the highest score, with respect to both Policy Statement 1 and Policy Statement 2. Candidate C, on the other hand, will not be ranked higher despite scoring more than Candidate B in Chemistry because of the lesser marks in Biology as per the second policy.
For this statement to be implemented, all candidates must have scored the same score for Biology. However, if there is a situation where the candidates have been able to score the same marks in both Biology and Chemistry, Policy Statement 3 will be implemented.
Policy Statement 3
Candidates with the least number of incorrect answers in all subjects including Biology, Chemistry and Physics, will be chosen over the other candidates. Let’s take the example of Candidates A, B and C again:
Candidate | No. of Incorrect Answers |
A | 25 |
B | 40 |
C | 20 |
As per the examples mentioned above, Candidate C will be preferred over Candidates B and C, meanwhile, Candidate A will be preferred over Candidate B only.
As per the statements that have been mentioned by the National Testing Agency, the ranking of the candidate will be initially determined based on the scores obtained in Biology and Chemistry. Following these, in cases where the candidates cannot be shortlisted using the scores obtained in the examination, candidates will further be shortlisted taking into consideration the number of answers that are incorrect.
If there is a situation where all the earlier statements are not applicable, i.e. all the candidates have secured the same scores in both subjects along with having the same number of incorrect answers, then the newly introduced policy statements will be implemented.
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy of Last Year
The tie-breaking policy comes in handy when two or more aspirants have secured the same rank. It helps in breaking the deadlock. Until last year, the NEET tie-breaking policy comprised of only three factors that can be termed as follows:
-
Candidate securing higher percentile score/ marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
-
Aspirants securing higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the Test
-
If the above criteria are not fulfilled, then applicants with number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all subjects will be given priority over the others.
