The counselling process for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2025, which was scheduled to begin today, has been postponed. The decision comes after the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a re-test at Indore and Ujjain exam centres due to power cuts during the exam held on May 4.

According to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, the NTA admitted that power was lost at several centres during the exam, forcing the organisers to resort to emergency lights and candles.

In addition, many centres did not have CCTV footage, which was considered a serious security lapse.

The court made it clear that even such minor disruptions in an important exam like NEET can affect the attention and performance of students. The court also rejected the NTA's argument that there was no major difference in the scores. The court said that the impact of power problems cannot be measured only from the score data.

What happens next?

Now NTA will first conduct re-tests for those students who were affected by the power cut. Only after that the new counseling dates of NEET UG 2025 will be released.

Candidates are advised to keep checking the official website of MCC https://mcc.nic.in regularly.

NEET UG 2025 Counseling Process – Understand in Simple Words

NEET UG counseling is a centralized process that helps students get admission in medical and dental colleges across India.

Step 1: Registration - Candidates register online by visiting the official website of MCC or state counseling portal and pay the fees.

Step 2: Filling Preferred Colleges/Courses - After this, candidates fill the list of their preferred colleges and courses and lock it. Once locked, no changes can be made to it.

Step 3: Seat Allotment - Seat allocation is done based on NEET rank, category, preference and seat availability.

Step 4: Reporting - Students who get a seat have to report to the respective college with original documents and pay the admission fee.

Step 5: Choice - Students can accept, upgrade or abandon the seat if they wish. This process is repeated in subsequent rounds (Round 2, Mop-up round, etc.).
