How to Calculate GATE Score 2021? Get Formula Here

“How to calculate GATE Score?” This is an extremely pertinent question for all the aspirants preparing to appear for GATE 2021. The main focus of the candidates should be on the preparations but it is quite essential for the candidates to know how to calculate GATE score. Knowing the answer to this question will help all the candidates evaluate their performance in the exam and plan their future strategy accordingly.

How to Calculate GATE Score?

There are students who often struggle with understanding the marking scheme and then how to calculate GATE scores. For papers that are conducted in one session, calculations are simpler. But for papers that are conducted in multiple sessions, the calculation of GATE scores and conversion of raw marks to normalized marks tend to make things more complicated. That is why we have decided to simplify the whole process of calculation so that it will be easier for you to understand how to calculate GATE score and how the 100 marks paper is converted to a score out of 1000.

How to Calculate GATE Score & How it is Different From GATE Marks?

In order to understand how to calculate GATE score, you should be clear with three aspects related to it:

  1. Raw GATE marks
  2. Normalized GATE Marks
  3. GATE Score

Let us learn about each of these one by one.

  1. Raw or Actual GATE Marks
    • These are the marks that a candidate gets in his/her paper out of 100.
    • There are a total of 65 questions ranging from multiple choice questions (MCQs), multiple select questions (MSQs), to numerical answer types (NATs).
    • Each question carries 1 or 2 marks and there is negative marking but only for MCQs – 1/3rd marks are deducted for every wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3rd marks are deducted for every wrong 2-marks MCQ.

  2. Normalized GATE Marks

Papers like Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering etc. see a very huge number of applicants. That is why the exams have to be conducted in multiple sessions. The examination authorities make sure that the number of candidates pided in each session of the same paper is random and of the same magnitude.

How to Calculate GATE Score Through Normalization?

    • In order to consider the slightest amount of variation in these multi session examinations, normalization of GATE marks have to be adopted to calculate GATE score.
    • Normalization of GATE marks is based on an underlying assumption that in all those GATE papers that are conducted in multiple sessions, the distribution of abilities of candidates will be the same across all the sessions.
    • Conversion of actual marks to normalized marks for multi-session subject papers take place through this formula:

gate score formula

Where,

M^ij is the normalized marks; ‘j’ is the candidate, ‘i’ is the session number

Mij = actual marks scored by jth candidate in ith session

tg= average marks scored by top 10 candidates or 0.1% candidates across all sessions

Mqg= sum of standard deviation & mean of marks scored by students across all sessions

ti = average marks scored by top 10 candidates or 0.1% candidates in ith session

Miq = sum of standard deviation & mean of marks scored by students in ith session

Once the raw (actual) marks have been calculated for papers with multiple sessions, the marks are normalized by putting corresponding numerical values like actual marks scored by the candidate in a particular session, the average marks scored by top 10candidates in all sessions etc. Now, the GATE score will be calculated on these normalized marks.

GATE Score

    • GATE score is calculated out of 1000.
    • GATE score for papers with only one session is calculated by using the raw or actual marks.
    • GATE score for papers that are conducted in multiple sessions are calculated on the basis of normalized marks – the actual marks scored in the session is first converted to normalized marks and then converted to GATE Score.
    • GATE score is calculated on the following formula:

gate score formula

Where,

M = Raw marks or actual marks scored by candidates in one session paper and normalized marks in case of exams held in multiple sessions

Mq = Qualifying marks for candidates belonging to the general category in the paper

M̅t = Average marks of top 10 or top 0.1% of the candidates who have taken the exam paper (in case of multi-session exams, calculate the average marks of top 10 or top 0.1% of the candidates who have appeared for the exam paper in all session)

Sq = 350, score given to Mq

St = 900, score given to M̅t

The qualifying marks (Mq) for General Category in each subject is 25 marks out of 100 or the sum of standard deviation + mean of marks of total candidates who have appeared in the paper, whichever is larger.

  • The GATE scorecards are available for download only after the results have been declared.
  • More importantly, the GATE scorecards are available to download only by those candidates who have a QUALIFIED GATE exam.
  • The GATE scorecards for 2021 are available for downloads for only a specified period of time (26th March 2021 to 31st May 2021) without any charges.
  • From 1st June 2021 onwards till 31st December 2021, the GATE scorecards will be available for download at a cost of Rs.500.
  • From 2022 onwards, you would not be able to download your GATE 2021 scorecards.
  • There is no provision for issuing scorecards in hardcopies.
  • The GATE score is used to calculate GATE AIR.
  • The GATE 2021 score will be valid for three years from the date of its issuance. No data will be available following this period.
