The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is expected to conduct the GATE 2026 exam for the academic session 2026-27. GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, a national-level exam for admission to postgraduate programs and recruitment in PSUs.

When Will GATE 2026 Registration Begin?
Considering the trends of previous years, the GATE 2026 application form may be released in August 2025 and the GATE 2026 exam date may be announced by the end of July. An information brochure will also be released on the official website of GATE containing details of eligibility, exam pattern, fees and syllabus.
Who Can Apply for GATE 2026?
Only those candidates will be eligible for GATE 2026 who are pursuing or have completed a degree in Engineering, Science, Arts, Commerce, Humanities or Architecture from a government recognized university. Even students who are in their third or final year can apply.
GATE 2026 Exam Pattern and Papers
GATE 2026 will be conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT). The duration of the exam will be 3 hours and it will consist of 30 test papers. Candidates can choose a maximum of two subjects. The paper will have questions based on General Aptitude (GA) and the chosen subject. Each question will carry 1 or 2 marks and negative marking will be applicable for wrong answers.

The aim of the GATE exam is to evaluate the students' in-depth understanding of the subject. GATE scores provide admission to courses like M.Tech and PhD in IITs, NITs and other prestigious institutes across the country. Also, many government companies (PSUs) like BHEL, ONGC, IOCL also recruit on the basis of GATE scores.
