The Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh (BIE AP) is planning big changes to help reduce exam stress for students. One of the biggest changes is that there will be no more Class 11 public exams. Instead, the focus will be on the Class 12 exams.
If you think back to your school days, remember the heavy burden of studying for both years’ exams? Imagine how much lighter the stress would have been if you didn’t have to worry about that first-year exam! This is exactly why BIE AP is shifting the system to make it more like CBSE, which doesn’t have exams for Class 11.
These changes are being proposed after listening to feedback from students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders. I remember how, when I was in school, many universities and colleges only cared about Class 12 results for admissions—first-year marks didn’t matter at all. It seems like BIE AP is now thinking the same way.
BIE AP also wants to update the syllabus, which hasn’t been changed in years. They've set up 14 committees to take care of the revisions. It’s good to see a much-needed update coming in!
Another proposed change is making the second language subject optional, so students will have more choices. They’re also planning to adjust how marks are divided between practical exams and theory exams, similar to the CBSE system. This would include new types of questions, like multiple-choice questions (MCQs), fill-in-the-blanks, and one-word answers. I think this shift will make things a lot simpler for students! Additionally, essay-type questions will carry fewer marks—going from 8 marks to 5 or 6 marks—so students can focus on understanding concepts more effectively.
These changes are all aimed at easing the exam pressure. Think of how much more time you would have had to focus on key concepts in your first year, instead of scrambling for both years’ exams. I imagine it would have made a huge difference in your confidence for the second year and for competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and others.
Under this new plan, Class 11 exams will be handled internally by junior colleges, based on a syllabus provided by BIE AP. But, Class 12 exams will still be managed by BIE AP.
BIE AP is asking for feedback from students, parents, and teachers about these changes. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, you can email them to biereforms@gmail.com by January 26. For more details, including the updated syllabus, check out the BIE AP website at bieap.gov.in.
