Battle of wills: On the U.S. war on Iran
The U.S. should lift (हटाना, समाप्त करना) its blockade (नाकाबंदी, घेराबंदी) so that Iran can open the Strait (जलडमरूमध्य) of Hormuz
The U.S. war on Iran has turned into (में बदल जाना) a battle of wills (इच्छाशक्ति का संघर्ष) in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, marked (चिन्हित करना, दर्शाना) by duelling naval (नौसैनिक) blockades and stalled (रुका हुआ, ठप पड़ा) diplomacy (कूटनीति). Iran, which has effectively (प्रभावी रूप से, वस्तुतः) restricted the free flow (निर्बाध प्रवाह) of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since the U.S. and Israel attacks on February 28, has refused to ease (कम करना, ढील देना) its control over the critical (अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण, निर्णायक) waterway (जलमार्ग). The U.S. insists that its blockade of Iranian ports will stay in place until a deal is reached (achieve, attain, arrive at, secure). Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to Pakistan, which mediated (to intervene in a dispute in order to bring about an agreement or reconciliation; negotiate, arbitrate, intervene, conciliate) the first round of direct talks (negotiations, discussions, dialogue, consultations) on April 11, but Iran declined further direct talks with Washington. The White House (the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States, located in Washington, D.C., often used as a metonym for the President and their administration or the executive branch of the U.S. government) had earlier said it would send special envoy (a messenger or representative, especially one on a diplomatic mission; diplomat, ambassador, emissary, delegate) Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad, but President Donald Trumpcancelled their trip after Mr. Araghchi left the Pakistani capital. Mr. Trump has repeatedly (over and over again; constantly, frequently, continually, consistently) said that Iran wants a deal. Yet, Tehran (the capital city of Iran, functioning as the seat of the government, often used as a metonym to refer to the Iranian political leadership or state administration) continues to refuse talks with the U.S., citing Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and America’s blockade in the Gulf of Oman. On paper (in theory rather than in reality; theoretically, hypothetically, supposedly, technically), a ceasefire (a temporary suspension of fighting; truce, armistice, cessation of hostilities) is in place in Lebanon, and Mr. Trump said earlier this month that Israel was “prohibited (to formally ban, forbid, bar, outlaw)” from attacking the country, but Israeli air strikes (an attack made by aircraft; aerial bombardment, air raid, bombing) have continued. He has also indicated no urgency to lift the blockade, betting (to feel sure that a particular situation will happen, or taking a risk on a particular outcome; gamble, anticipate, predict, wager) that sustained (continuous, constant, prolonged, steady) economic pressure will force Iran to change its position (a point of view or attitude; stance, standpoint, viewpoint, posture).
The only silver lining (a hopeful or comforting prospect in the midst of a difficult or unhappy situation; glimmer of hope, positive aspect, bright side, saving grace) is that the Iran ceasefire, announced on April 8, is still holding (to remain secure, intact, or in effect; remain, endure, last, persist). Despite Mr. Trump’s threats, he has held fire even after Iran seized (to take hold of suddenly and forcibly, especially by military or legal authority; capture, appropriate, impound, confiscate) ships in the Persian Gulf (a mediterranean sea in Western Asia, connected to the Gulf of Oman through the Strait of Hormuz, holding massive strategic importance as a major global oil and gas export route). Tehran, too, despite warning retaliation (counterattack, reprisal, retribution, vengeance) over a U.S. seizure (the action of capturing someone or something using force; capture, confiscation, taking, appropriation) of an Iranian tanker (a ship, road vehicle, or aircraft for carrying liquids, especially petroleum, in bulk; oil carrier, cargo ship, transport ship, vessel), has not followed through. Both sides have remained diplomatically (in a way that relates to diplomacy or international relations; via negotiation, politically, officially, state-to-state) engaged through Pakistan. The alternative to diplomacy is disaster (catastrophe, calamity, tragedy). The U.S. and Israel bombed (to attack a place with bombs; bombard, blast, shell, strike) Iran for 40 days but failed to secure (to succeed in obtaining or achieving something; achieve, obtain, acquire, gain) a favourable strategic (relating to the identification of long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them; tactical, calculated) outcome, and the global economic fallout (the adverse side effects or results of a situation; repercussion, consequence, aftermath, effect) of this illegal war is now being felt (past participle of feel; experience, undergo, perceive, endure). For diplomacy to succeed, Mr. Trump and the Iranian leadership should adopt (implement, embrace, take on, employ) a phased (step-by-step, gradual, incremental, staged) approach. Rather than (instead of, as opposed to, and not, in place of) acting as if (as would be the case if; as though, like, in a way that suggests, purporting that) the war has not changed the region’s strategic realities, the U.S. should offer (propose, present, provide, tender) tangible (concrete, real, actual, palpable) concessions to Iran in return for (as an exchange or reward for something; in exchange for, as a substitute for, as payment for, against) compromises on core issues. Iran has demonstrated (show, display, exhibit, indicate) a measure (a certain amount or degree of something; degree, amount, portion, extent) of deterrence (the action of discouraging an action or event through instilling doubt or fear of the consequences; discouragement, prevention, disincentive, intimation) by asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz. But if it continues to disrupt (interrupt, disturb, interfere with, upset) commercial traffic (the movement of ships or vehicles engaged in trade and commerce; trade transit, merchant transport, business logistics), further damaging the global economy, it risks squandering (waste, throw away, dissipate, misuse) the goodwill (friendly, helpful, or cooperative feelings or attitude; benevolence, friendliness, harmony, amity) it enjoys as the underdog (a competitor thought to have little chance of winning a fight or contest; weaker party, victim, disadvantaged party, dark horse). A practical first step would be reciprocal (given, felt, or done in return; mutual, corresponding, equivalent, interactive) de-escalation: the U.S. lifting its blockade and Iran reopening the Strait to commercial shipping. This would also reinforce (strengthen, bolster, fortify, consolidate) the fragile (easily broken, damaged, or destroyed; vulnerable, delicate, shaky, weak) ceasefire and build confidence, paving the way for the next round of direct talks on outstanding (unresolved, unsettled, pending, unaddressed) issues, including the nuclear programme.
