Grim future: On the economy, discomfiting data

Grim future: On the economy, discomfiting data

Grim future: On the economy, discomfiting data

India’s economic fundamentals (मूल सिद्धांत, आधारभूत तत्व) need a realistic reassessment (पुनर्मूल्यांकन, पुनः मूल्यांकन)

The economy has recently been yielding (उत्पन्न करना, परिणाम देना) some discomfiting (असहज करने वाला, परेशान करने वाला) data, even before the war in West Asia began. The most recent of these was the February 2026 data on the Index of Eight Core Industries (आठ प्रमुख उद्योगों का सूचकांक). This release showed that growth in the overall Index (सूचकांक) had dropped (गिरना, कमी आना) to a three-month low in February, half the rate of what it saw in January. This was not a case of a high base effect, either, with growth in February 2025 having been just 3.4%. The sector-wise data reveal (उजागर करना, प्रकट करना) further issues. The domestic crude oil (कच्चा तेल) industry has been contracting for six consecutive months. In fact (वास्तव में, दरअसल), the sector has contracted (सिकुड़ना, घट जाना) in 20 out of the last 24 months. The natural gas (प्राकृतिक गैस) sector, too, has contracted for the last 20 consecutive (लगातार, लगातार होने वाला) months. As context, from about the middle of last year, it had been increasingly (more and more, progressively, continuously) clear that there would be some sort of (to some extent, though not exactly or entirely; somewhat, rather, kind of, moderately) escalation between the U.S. and Iran, even if the exact nature (characteristic, essence, quality) of the war now could not have been predicted then. It is no secret that (it is well known that, it is obvious that) India is highly dependent (reliant, contingent, conditional, vulnerable) on energy imports, especially from the region that would have faced (encounter, deal with, confront, tackle) the brunt of any such escalation (a rapid increase in intensity; intensification, aggravation, worsening, magnification). As a matter of fact, a large part of the contraction (decline, shrinkage, reduction, downturn) in domestic production was likely (probably, presumably, in all probability, expectably) because imports were coming cheap. Yet, as tensions (strain, friction, stress, unease) increased, it might have been more prudent (wise, sensible, cautious, far-sighted) to have increased (expanded, heightened, elevated, amplified) domestic oil and gas production over the last eight months so as to (in order to achieve a particular aim or result; in order to, with the aim of, for the purpose of, to) at least build reserves (a supply of a commodity (like oil or gas) kept available for future use or emergency situations; stockpile, store, stock, supply), if not to also temporarily reduce import dependence (the state of a country heavily relying on goods or raw materials brought in from foreign nations to meet domestic demand; reliance on imports, foreign dependency). Permanently reducing such dependence (reliance, dependency, interdependency, need) will take time, but a temporary domestic production push (a vigorous or determined effort to achieve a specific objective; effort, drive, initiative, campaign) — as is belatedly (happening or done later than should have been the case; late, tardily, overdue, delayed) underway — might have considerably (significantly, substantially, noticeably, vastly) alleviated (mitigate, ease, relieve, lessen) the current supply crunch (a severe shortage in the availability of goods, resources, or raw materials needed by an economy; supply shortage, scarcity, supply bottleneck, deficit). Hindsight is 20-20, but that does not excuse a lack (absence, deficiency, shortage, scarcity) of foresight (anticipation, forward-planning, vision, prudence) or an inability (incapacity) to learn. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana of 2016 should have triggered (to cause something to happen or exist, especially suddenly; precipitate, prompt, initiate, set off) a concerted (joint, united, coordinated, collaborative) policy to secure (obtain, acquire, gain) LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas, a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as fuel in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles) supplies and reserves.

This poor (weak, inadequate, unsatisfactory) core sector performance comes on top of the new series of GDP data (the revised economic data framework formulated by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) using an updated base year to measure Gross Domestic Product more accurately) showing that the Indian economy is actually smaller than previously thought. Further, between 2022-23 and 2025-26, the contributions to GDP of key engines (a primary driving force or crucial factor that stimulates growth and development within an economy; main driver, primary catalyst, principal stimulus) such as private consumption (the total value of consumer goods and services purchased by households and non-profit institutions within an economy; consumer spending, household consumption, domestic demand), capital formation (the net accumulation of physical capital goods, such as equipment, tools, and infrastructure, that are used in the production of other goods; investment in capital goods, asset creation, infrastructure buildup), exports and imports have all fallen. The share (portion, proportion, percentage) of ‘change in stocks’ has nearly (very close to; almost; practically, virtually, approximately) doubled, however, meaning that (used to introduce a logical conclusion, interpretation, or implication of a preceding statement; implying that, signifying that, indicating that) there is production but not enough sales. Soon, that production too will reduce to fall in line with (to conform to, align with, or adjust to match a prevailing standard, trend, or level; conform to, match, harmonize with, correlate with) the subdued (restrained, sluggish, quiet) demand. All of this leads into the impact of the current crisis (emergency, disaster, meltdown, predicament). With commercial fuel sources curtailed (reduce, cut back, restrict, limit), oil prices at more than $100 a barrel (a standard unit of measurement for crude oil, equivalent to 42 US gallons or approximately 159 liters), and global economic uncertainty (worldwide financial unpredictability, global market instability) at a high, economists and rating agencies (independent financial organizations (like Moody’s, S&P, Fitch) that evaluate the creditworthiness, economic strength, and risk level of countries or corporations; credit rating agencies) are already downgrading India’s growth outlook (economic forecast, growth projection) to about 6.5%. Perhaps (maybe, possibly, conceivably, arguably), India’s much-vaunted (highly praised, widely touted, boasted, acclaimed) macroeconomic (relating to the branch of economics concerned with large-scale or general economic factors, such as national productivity, inflation, and interest rates; large-scale economic) fundamentals and resilience (the capacity of an economy to recover quickly from difficulties, shocks, or financial downturns; toughness, adaptability, durability, recovery capability) need a more realistic assessment.
