B.Tech placement data from 19 of the 23 IITs shows that three-quarters of them have seen an increase in the percentage of students securing placements in 2024-25 compared to the previous year, when placements at most IITs had declined sharply.
Despite this increase, placement figures for 2024-25 are still below 2021-22 levels at all 19 IITs.
In response to Right to Information applications filed with the 23 IITs on B.Tech placement figures for 2024-25, 19 provided data.
B.Tech placement figures from 2021-22 to 2023-24 were presented in a Parliamentary Standing Committee report earlier this year.

Parliamentary Panel Had Raised Red Flags
Data from the March 2025 report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, chaired by Digvijay Singh, revealed that more than half of the country's 23 IITs saw a decline of more than 10 percent in placements in 2023-24 compared to 2021-22.
The report described the decline in placements in all but one IIT as "abnormal."

Why Are Placements Recovering?
IIT directors said that after the slump in 2023-24, efforts were made to reach out to more companies.
On the placement figures remaining lower than the 2021-22 level, Prof Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar, said that students turning to start-ups and higher education, and those who may have received job offers but not through the placement office would not figure in the placement statistics.
IIT Ropar Placement Trends
| Year | Placement % | Students Registered |
|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 88% | 252 |
| 2023-24 | 75% | 292 |
| 2024-25 | 80% | 321 |
Core Engineering and Manufacturing Jobs Are Growing
Prof. Ahuja says this year’s improvement is mainly due to a rise in core engineering and manufacturing jobs. Earlier, even civil engineering students preferred IT roles. Now, demand for core branches and manufacturing profiles is growing again.
He also sees a clear shift in student mindset. Stability matters more now. Students are watching the global job market, especially in the US, and they realise that manufacturing roles are often more stable. IT offers fast growth, but it also comes with sudden slowdowns and layoffs.
Traditionally, core jobs in civil, mechanical, or other engineering fields pay less than software or consulting roles. But many students seem willing to trade a higher package for long-term security and steady growth.

Software Still Leads, But Core Roles Are Catching Up
IIT Guwahati’s placement report for 2024-25 for both UG and PG students shows that jobs in the software sector contributed the most to placements (45%), followed by ‘core engineering’ (graduate or postgraduate engineer trainees/technical executives — 17%).
IIT Mandi: Sector-Wise Placement Breakdown
| Sector | 2023-24 | 2024-25 |
|---|---|---|
| IT/Software/Data Science | 64% | 66% |
| Core Engineering | 13% | 16% |
| Consulting | 15% | 10% |
| Analytics | 15% | — |
More Students Are Registering for Campus Placements
Out of the 19 IITs that shared data, 13 reported a rise in the number of students appearing for placements compared to last year.
Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, said, "Job offers are increasing, but the number of students appearing for placements is also increasing.
Overall, the nature of jobs, the job market... are changing globally. The causes and effects are not very clear. There was a slight decline last year, which has now almost recovered. This is partly due to the efforts of the institutions themselves.
We are trying to reach out to more people and connect with more companies. Although students are also getting jobs in start-ups, they also expect a fixed salary package."

IIT Delhi Placement Trends
| Year | Placement % | Students Registered |
|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 87.69% | 707 |
| 2023-24 | 72.81% | 938 |
| 2024-25 | 79% | 987 |
The Bottom Line
IIT placements are on the mend, but they haven't fully recovered from the 2023-24 slump. Institutes are working harder to attract recruiters. Students are also adapting—some are choosing stability over high-paying IT jobs, while others are exploring startups and higher studies.
The 2021-22 peak remains out of reach for now. But the upward trend in 2024-25 offers hope for the coming years.
