Admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) under the Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) is a very important milestone for all engineering aspirants in India.
Each year, lakhs of students appear for the JEE Main exam, but only high-scoring candidates manage to get admission to the prestigious NITs.
The marks required for admission to any specific NIT in the academic year 2025 will depend on the NIT, the branch of engineering chosen, the category of the candidate, and the competition prevailing at that time.

JEE Main Cut-off
The JEE Main cut-off scores are the minimum marks that students need to score to get admission to NITs. The number of applicants, the level of difficulty in the exam, availability of seats, and percentage of reservations made on the basis of caste are some of the factors that influence the cut-off. As a rule, the cut-offs are declared through the closing ranks in each NIT and its respective engineering branches.
- Merit Cut-off – It indicates the candidates who qualify for JEE Advanced.
- Admission cut-off – This shows the final rank for each NIT and its specific branch, based on which students get admission.
The specific cut-off for 2025 will be confirmed only after the exam is conducted, but data trends from previous years can at least give some estimate.

JEE Main 2024 Cut-off Trends
Although the exact cut-off for 2025 will be determined after the exam, past trends provide an estimate:
Category | JEE Main 2024 Cut-off (Percentile) |
General | 93.23% |
OBC | 79.67% |
EWS | 81.31% |
SC | 60.09% |
ST | 50.23% |
This means that general category candidates need at least 93-94 percentile in JEE Main, while candidates from reserved categories have relatively lower cut-offs.
The cut-off is determined as per the reservation policies. The cut-off of a candidate belonging to OBC, SC, ST, and EWS categories is always lower than that of the general category. Take the example of an OBC student who wants to get into CSE at NIT Warangal.
He will need to secure a rank around 761, i.e., more than 252 marks. On the other hand, there are separate cut-offs for SC and ST candidates which are determined based on reservation rules and seat quota.

NIT Surathkal | Electrical | 8000 | 15000 | 40000 | 60000 |
NIT Rourkela | Mechanical | 12000 | 22000 | 50000 | 70000 |
These figures are based on past trends, and actual 2025 cut-offs will be determined post-exam.
Preparation Strategy
Preparation will always increase your chances of getting the preferred NIT and branch.
1. Exam Pattern: Understand the JEE Main syllabus and exam pattern.
2. Regular Practice: Solve previous years question papers or take mock tests to find out the gaps in your preparation.
3. Time Management: Keep a fixed time for each subject and work specifically on the weak topics.
4. Keep a track of the official announcements of the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding the exam date, pattern, etc.
It is not known how many marks will be required for admission to NIT in the year 2025. However, working towards achieving a high rank in JEE Main 2025 will increase your chances of getting a seat in the desired NIT and branch. Thorough preparation, getting familiar with the JEE Main exam pattern, and following official updates are the steps towards achieving this.
