There has been a huge increase in the choice of students for admission to India's top engineering institutes for JEE Main 2026.

IIT Madras, which has been ranked number 1 in the NIRF rankings for 10 consecutive years, has seen an increase in student interest in almost all programs in 2026 as compared to 2025.

This time the number of choices has increased by an average of 8% to 16%.

Most Popular Course

IIT Madras's 5-year Aerospace Engineering program has seen the highest increase in student choice. While 9,505 students chose it last year, this time this number has increased to 11,069 i.e. an increase of 16.45%.

Apart from this, the B.Tech course of Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics has also become increasingly popular, with an increase from 20,323 to 23,015 students showing interest.

Other Major Programmes

4-year Aerospace Engineering – around 11.88% increase in options

Engineering Physics – 11.87% increase
Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) – 11.82% increase, total 26,547 students opted
Electrical Engineering – 10.28% increase
Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering – 10.07% increase

It is clear from these figures that the demand for both traditional and new programmes is constantly increasing.

Newly Launched Courses

IIT Madras has recently launched new programs like Computational Engineering & Mechanics and Instrumentation & Biomedical Engineering. Both these courses have also attracted a good number of students. This shows that students are more inclined towards the emerging fields of the future.
