NEET UG Result 2023 : Tie-Breaking Rules, Check Now
The NEET UG 2023 exam, conducted on May 7, 2023, holds great significance for aspirants aiming to pursue MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses in India. As candidates eagerly await the results, it is crucial for them to stay updated with the latest news and notifications regarding NEET UG 2023.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has made notable changes to the tie-breaking policy for NEET 2023. Apart from the existing three factors, the NTA has introduced six additional factors that will come into play during a tie-breaking situation. These modifications aim to ensure fair ranking and selection of applicants based on their performance and basic eligibility.
With a considerable number of applicants vying for limited seats, it is highly probable that some candidates will score identical marks. In such scenarios, determining their ranks becomes a critical task. Therefore, the NTA has meticulously devised a tie-breaker policy that will impartially rank and shortlist all applicants for admissions. NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Explained
The three different policies that were put in action as per the rules and regulations of NTA till last year are explained below:
Policy Statement 1
Candidates who have obtained a higher score in NEET Biology will be considered first, over the other candidate/s.
For Example, let’s consider the contents given in the table below:
Candidate |
Marks Obtained in NEET Biology |
A |
265 |
B |
300 |
C |
245 |
Based on the information provided, Candidate B will be prioritized over Candidate A and C according to the initial policy and aforementioned details. However, if we consider the marks obtained by the candidates, Candidate A will be given preference over Candidate C.
According to this policy, the candidate who obtains the highest marks in the Biology section of the entrance exam will receive a higher ranking compared to the other candidates. In the event that all candidates secure the same score in this section, Policy Statement 2 will come into effect.
Policy Statement 2
Policy Statement 2 states that candidates with a higher score in Chemistry will be ranked above others. To illustrate this, let's consider the example of Candidates A, B, and C based on the provided information.
Candidate |
Marks Obtained in NEET Biology |
Marks Obtained in NEET Chemistry |
A |
300 |
135 |
B |
300 |
156 |
C |
296 |
160 |
Considering the mentioned scenario, Candidate B will be given priority over Candidate A and C due to securing the highest score, in accordance with both Policy Statement 1 and Policy Statement 2. However, despite outscoring Candidate B in Chemistry, Candidate C will not receive a higher ranking due to lower marks in Biology, as stated in the second policy.
This statement applies when all candidates have obtained an identical score in the Biology section. Nevertheless, if a situation arises where candidates achieve the same marks in both Biology and Chemistry, Policy Statement 3 will be implemented.
Policy Statement 3
Candidates with the least number of incorrect answers in all subjects including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, will be chosen over the other candidate/s. Let’s take the example of Candidates A, B, and C again:
Candidate |
No. of Incorrect Answers |
A |
25 |
B |
40 |
C |
20 |
In adherence to the NEET tie-breaker regulations, the ranking of candidates is determined based on multiple factors. Initially, the scores achieved in Biology and Chemistry are taken into consideration to establish the ranking. In situations where a tie still exists, the number of incorrect answers is considered to further differentiate among candidates.
If, even after evaluating the scores and incorrect answers, a tie persists, the NEET 2023 tie-breaker rules are implemented. These rules offer a fair and transparent mechanism to resolve the tie, ensuring an unbiased and accurate ranking process. This enables the selection of deserving candidates based on their performance in the NEET examination.
NEET 2022 Tie-Breaking Policy
The tie-breaking policy plays a crucial role when two or more aspirants secure the same rank, helping to break the deadlock. Until last year, the NEET tie-breaker policy consisted of three factors, as follows:
- Candidate obtaining a higher percentile score/marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by
- Aspirants securing higher marks/percentile scores in Chemistry in the Test
- If the above criteria are not fulfilled, applicants with a lesser number of attempted incorrect answers and more correct answers in all subjects are given priority over others.
Revised NEET 2023 Tie-Breaking Policy
The NEET 2023 tie-breaking policy has been revised this year, introducing changes to the existing framework. Along with the marks obtained in NEET, the policy now incorporates the age factor. Additionally, the policy that previously considered scores in Biology and Chemistry will now also include marks in Physics to determine the final ranks of candidates. Let's examine the revised NEET 2023 tie-breaking policy in order of preference:
- Candidates obtaining higher percentile scores/marks in Biology in NEET 2023, followed by
- Candidates obtaining higher percentile scores/marks in Chemistry in NEET 2023, followed by
- Candidates scoring higher percentile scores/marks in Physics in NEET 2023, followed by
- Applicants with a lesser number of incorrect answers in all three subjects of the NEET 2023 exam, followed by
- Applicants with a lesser number of incorrect answers in Biology, followed by
- Candidates with a lesser number of incorrect answers in Chemistry, followed by
- Candidates with a lesser number of incorrect answers in NEET 2023 Physics, followed by
- Candidates older in age, followed by
- NEET 2023 application numbers in ascending order.
Changes Introduced in NEET 2023
