The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made significant revisions to the NEET UG (MBBS) seat matrix for the 2025-26 academic session, bringing significant relief to medical aspirants across the country.

According to data updated as of October 10, a total of 126,600 MBBS seats are now available in India.

This number includes renewals of existing seats and 9,075 newly approved seats (excluding AIIMS and JIPMER) this session. This is a major step towards expanding medical education.

Continuous Changes in Seat Numbers

The NEET UG 2025 seat matrix has undergone several revisions throughout the year. This is primarily due to changes in the seat approval status of various medical colleges, pending court cases, and delays in renewals and approvals.

Significant Revisions in September: In September, the NMC added 6,850 seats, but also removed over 1,056 seats due to regulatory compliance and legal reasons.

Latest Update: Nearly ten days later, the seat matrix was updated again, approving 7,375 new seats and reducing 456 seats. This revision was primarily due to the Cabinet's approval of 10,000 MBBS seats under the third phase of the expansion of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS).

Substantial Expansion of Seats in States

The revised seat matrix shows a significant increase in the number of MBBS seats in many states, expanding opportunities for students to enter the medical field.

Increase in Andhra Pradesh: The number of seats at Shantiram Medical College in Nandyal has been increased from 150 to 250. Furthermore, Anna Gowri Medical College and Hospital has also received approval to open a new college with 150 seats.

Other Major States: States like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have also added additional MBBS seats to their institutions, strengthening the medical education infrastructure in the southern and western regions of the country.

Seat reduction: Meanwhile, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Delhi has seen a reduction of 150 seats, reflecting NMC's commitment to maintaining regulatory compliance.

MCC Counseling Deadline Extended

In view of this revision in the seat matrix, the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) has extended the choice filling deadline for NEET UG Round 3 counseling to October 13, 2025.

Candidates who have not yet submitted their preferences should visit the official website, mcc.nic.in, as soon as possible to carefully review the latest seat matrix and fill their choices. The Round 3 seat allocation results are expected to be declared by October 15.

Candidates are advised to strictly follow the updated seat matrix and revised schedule to secure their preferred seat. The addition of over 9,000 new seats is expected to result in minor changes in cut-offs, increasing the chances of even middle-ranked students getting better colleges.
