An online marksheet is a valid document to prove one’s eligibility for applying to undergraduate programs. In 2026, there has been a paradigm shift in favor of ‘going digital’, and students are now finding it necessary to compare the original CBSE marksheet with the digital version available on DigiLocker.
While both the mark sheets certify the same merit, the differences between them lie in their formats, availability, and methods of use. Let us try to understand this difference in a simplified way.

1. Validity and Legal Status
The question most frequently asked by students is: Is a DigiLocker marksheet valid?
Of course. As per the Information Technology Act, electronic records generated from DigiLocker have legal validity. Hence, a document available on DigiLocker is as valid as the original document.
You can confidently use it for college admissions, competitive examinations, and most official purposes.
2. Immediate Use vs. Permanent Record
The DigiLocker marksheet is designed for speed and efficiency. While physical copies often take several weeks to reach schools, the digital version becomes available within just a few minutes of the results being declared.
Most universities and colleges accept the DigiLocker copy for provisional admissions. Consequently, students do not have to wait before applying.
Nevertheless, the original hard-copy marksheet is still preferred in the following instances:
- Maintaining permanent records
- Long-term archival purposes
- International visa applications
- Certain employment procedures that require a physical stamp or seal

- Both versions are secure—but they employ different methods to establish authenticity.
Original Marksheet:
- It features a physical hologram and the signature of the Controller of Examinations.
- It utilizes micro-line borders and ghost images to prevent counterfeiting.
DigiLocker Copy:
- Authenticated via a secure QR code and digital signature.
- It employs encryption and Aadhaar-linked verification to protect data against tampering.
- Both are equally secure and verified. The only difference lies in the method of authentication.
Which one should you use?
It couldn’t be easier; just use DigiLocker for instant access, and keep your originals handy for future purposes.
If you want to use your mark sheets for applying to colleges or sending applications, then copies stored in DigiLocker will do fine. But if you need them for some foreign processes like visa application, etc., then keep your originals safe.
