Belated warning: On the Prime Minister’s austerity appeal
Belated warning: On the Prime Minister’s austerity appeal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suggestions (सुझाव, परामर्श) to Indians imply (इंगित करना, निहित होना) a serious economic impact (आर्थिक प्रभाव)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seven-point call to action (कार्यवाही करने का आह्वान) for the citizens of India lays bare (उजागर करना, पूरी तरह प्रकट करना) the severity (गंभीरता, तीव्रता) of the impact of the West Asia crisis. Further, apart from its implications (निहितार्थ, परिणाम), Mr. Modi’s message is problematic for two other key reasons: its timing and content (सामग्री, विषय-वस्तु). A key (मुख्य, महत्वपूर्ण) part of his message was to urge (आग्रह करना, प्रेरित करना) people to work from home and reduce their fuel usage. A more effective (प्रभावी, कारगर) approach might have been to lead by example (to guide others through one’s own behavior and actions instead of just issuing verbal instructions; set an example, be a role model, demonstrate, show the way). Yet, Mr. Modi’s message comes days after he and his Cabinet colleagues (सहकर्मी) flew all over (everywhere, worldwide, countrywide, throughout, comprehensively) the country and organised roadshows to campaign (अभियान) for the recent elections. Neither (not the one nor the other of two people or things; not either, nor, not at all, also not) did any of his pre-election speeches mention these issues. His message also comes on the back of daily reassurances (the action of removing someone’s doubts or fears; comfort, confidence, encouragement, consolation, solace) by his government’s officials (officer, functionary, administrator, executive) that there was nothing to worry. Clearly, there is. The Prime Minister’s message also follows various Ministers’ attempts to heap praise on (to praise someone or something very enthusiastically; commend highly, acclaim, extol, laud) him for not raising petrol and diesel prices. A decision not to further burden (to cause someone hardship, distress, or extra economic strain; weigh down, oppress, trouble, strain) the common man is welcome (pleasing, agreeable, encouraging, appreciated), but the flip side (downside, disadvantage, drawback, opposite side) is that it fails to impress upon (to make someone understand the importance or value of something; emphasize, stress, urge, instill) them the need to curtail (reduce, cut back, restrict, limit) consumption. The government took that strategic (relating to the identification of long-term or overall aims and interests; calculated, deliberate, tactical) call before the elections, and is now trying to dilute (weaken, diminish, reduce, water down) it. Perhaps (maybe, possibly, conceivably, perchance) a hike (a sharp or sudden increase, especially in price or cost; increase, rise, escalation) in fuel prices will follow soon. The Prime Minister’s speech also coincided (to occur at or during the same time; happen together, occur simultaneously, concur, synchronize) with a similar call (a decision, demand, or strategic move made by an authority; decision, choice, move) to action for Indian corporates by the Confederation of Indian Industry (a non-governmental, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization playing a proactive role in India’s development process by shaping industry policies and engaging with the government). This kind of coordinated messaging (the practice of communicating a unified and consistent message across different individuals, bodies, or platforms; unified communication, synchronized statements) points to a dire (extremely serious, urgent, or terrible in nature; terrible, awful, severe, grim) situation. Several of the Prime Minister’s suggestions might also have other negative impacts that could be more serious than the problems they are trying to address (tackle, deal with, handle, confront). Some others might simply not be as effective as he hopes.
If farmers stop using chemical fertilizers (a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its fertility; compost, manure), as he has urged, the immediate impact will be on crop (a cultivated plant that is grown as food, especially a grain, fruit, or vegetable; harvest, produce, yield) output at a time (during a specific period or in a particular situation; during, in a period, at a moment, exactly when) when El Niño (a climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, which can have significant impacts on global weather patterns including reducing monsoon rainfall in India) is already set to (ready or likely to do something; prepared, scheduled, arranged, about to) hurt it. High-frequency indicators (an economic metric or data point that is published frequently (such as daily or weekly) and provides a real-time snapshot of economic activity; real-time economic data, rapid indicator, frequent metric, quick-pulse data) are already revealing (disclose, uncover, expose, bring to light) the economic damage of the West Asia crisis. This will only exacerbate (worsen, aggravate, compound, intensify) the situation. The suggestion to stop foreign travel will conserve (save, preserve, protect, hoard) foreign exchange, but Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data up to (until, till) February 2026 shows that Indians’ foreign travel spending (expenditure, expenses, outlay, consumption) in 2025-26 was already down (reduced, lower) by 3%. March, the first month after the Iran war broke out, is likely to have seen an even sharper decline. The real pressure on the rupee and India’s foreign exchange (the currency of other countries utilized in international trade and reserves; forex, foreign currency, international currency, reserves) is because foreign institutional investors (an investor or investment fund registered in a country outside of the one in which it is investing, often engaging in large-scale market transactions) are pulling out (withdraw, remove, extract, retreat) while the RBI is using valuable dollars to shore up (support, bolster, prop up, strengthen) the falling (drop, decline, decrease, depreciate) currency. Urging Indians to buy local is another way of asking them to consume (to use up a resource entirely or to buy goods and services; use, expend, deplete, devour) less, since purely domestic supply is not nearly enough to cater to (to provide what is needed or required by someone or something; serve, meet the needs of, provide for, accommodate) the demand. Asking them to buy less gold is also likely to be futile (incapable of producing any useful result; pointless, useless, vain, ineffectual). All this means that the economy is in for a hard time over the next few months — a warning the Prime Minister should have delivered (to state or announce something formally, such as a speech or a warning; announce, issue, proclaim, present) much earlier, elections or no elections.
