A TVK-led government with aligned partners was the only viable (व्यवहार्य, संभव) post-poll (चुनाव के बाद का) outcome (परिणाम, नतीजा) in Tamil Nadu

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and its leader C. Joseph Vijay, who was sworn in as Chief Minister along with nine Ministers from the party on Sunday, took the shortest and straightest route to power. Falling 10 seats short of the 118-seat majority mark (बहुमत का आंकड़ा), the TVK secured (प्राप्त करना, हासिल करना) the support of four ideologically aligned (वैचारिक रूप से समान) parties — the Congress (five MLAs), CPI(M), CPI, and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, or VCK (two each) — with the IUML’s two MLAs taking the tally (कुल संख्या, सीटों की संख्या, गणना) to 121. The TVK had, soon after its formation (गठन, स्थापना), sought (प्रयास किया, तलाश किया) to position (प्रस्तुत करना, स्थापित करना) the Congress and the VCK as ideological partners; that it has now drawn (आकर्षित करना, प्राप्त करना) support from them and the Left and the IUML, even though (हालांकि, बावजूद इसके कि) they contested within the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led coalition (गठबंधन, मोर्चा), is therefore not out of place (inappropriate, unsuitable, or not fitting the situation; inappropriate, unfitting, incongruous, unsuitable). The alternative mooted (to suggest a plan or idea for discussion; propose, suggest, put forward, float) by AIADMK leaders, and endorsed (समर्थन करना, अनुमोदन करना) by some DMK leaders — an AIADMK government propped up by the DMK — would have been an immoral (unethical, wrong, unprincipled, corrupt) exercise. In any case (whatever happens or regardless of the circumstances; regardless, anyhow, anyway, nevertheless), outgoing (leaving an office or position; departing, retiring, exiting, former) Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was against such a farcical (absurd, ridiculous, or resembling a farce; ridiculous, absurd, preposterous, laughable) twist. Meanwhile, by demanding written proof of 118 MLAs’ support before inviting the TVK, the single largest party, to form the government, Governor Rajendra Arlekar ignored the Sarkaria Commission framework (the guidelines established by the Justice R.S. Sarkaria-led commission (1983) on Centre-State relations, specifically detailing the hierarchy of options a Governor must follow to invite parties to form a government in a hung assembly) — which prioritises (to treat something as being more important than other things; highlight, favor, emphasize, give precedence to) the single largest party with outside support next only to (in the second position of importance after; secondary to, following, subordinate to, trailing) a pre-poll alliance — and the Supreme Court’s ruling (judgment, decision, verdict, decree) in Rameshwar Prasad (2006) that only the floor of the House (the legislative assembly or chamber where voting and debates take place; legislative assembly, parliamentary chamber, voting floor, state legislature) can test a Ministry’s strength (the required numerical backing or majority in a legislature; majority, numbers, backing, power).

The Congress, for its part, jumped (to eagerly accept an opportunity; eagerly accept, seize, snatch, grab) at the offer (regarding the proposal or opportunity presented) opportunistically (taking advantage of opportunities as they arise, regardless of planning or principle; pragmatically, calculatingly, self-interestedly, expediently), pledging (to formally promise or commit to something; promise, vow, commit, guarantee) support to the TVK and committing to an alliance for local, Assembly (a body of elected representatives serving as a legislature; legislature, parliament, lower house) and parliamentary elections. That it would so casually (in a relaxed, informal, or unconcerned manner; informally, nonchalantly, indifferently, offhandedly) jeopardise (to put into a situation in which there is a danger of loss, harm, or failure; threaten, endanger, risk, imperil) a decades-old (having existed for several periods of ten years; long-standing, historic, enduring, well-established) alliance with the DMK is unsurprising (predictable, expected, anticipated, foreseeable). The party contested the 2026 elections half-heartedly (without enthusiasm or energy; unenthusiastically, lukewarmly, passively, indifferently), divided (split, fractured, splintered, disunited) at the top (among the leadership or highest-ranking members of an organization; in leadership, among senior members, at the highest level, in the upper echelons), and that ambivalence (the state of having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something; uncertainty, hesitation, indecision, doubt) showed in its returns: (result, yield, outcome, dividend) in the 28 seats it contested, it polled just 28% of the vote — the second-lowest share within the DMK-led coalition; only the late-entrant (latecomer, new arrival, recent participant, delayed joiner) DMDK did worse. It was also short-sighted (lacking imagination or foresight; lacking foresight, myopic, ill-advised, unwise), given (taking into account or considering; considering, bearing in mind, in view of, keeping in mind) that this alliance helped the INDIA bloc win all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu in 2024. The Left and VCK lent support to the TVK while citing the need for a stable government and reiterating (to say something again; repeat, restate, reaffirm, state again) their partnership with the DMK against communal forces (groups or entities that promote sectarian division and conflict based on religion or community; sectarian groups, divisive elements, religious extremists, polarising entities). The elections produced Tamil Nadu’s first hung verdict (an election outcome where no single political party or pre-existing coalition wins an absolute majority; hung assembly, split mandate, fractured mandate) in decades, and the response to it was a test of constitutional propriety (the quality of conforming to the established legal principles and conventions of the constitution; constitutional correctness, legal rectitude) and political character (the moral strength, integrity, and ethical standing of a politician or political party; political integrity, moral standing). Despite an avoidable delay, a TVK-led government has eventually (finally, ultimately, in the end, subsequently) taken charge. It is now incumbent upon (necessary for someone as a duty or responsibility; mandatory for, required of, necessary for, binding on) Mr. Vijay to build on (to use something as a base or foundation for further progress; develop, expand on, advance, progress from) the foundations (an underlying basis or principle; basis, groundwork, base, bedrock) laid by Dravidian (pertaining to the political movements and parties in Tamil Nadu that advocate for social justice, rationalism, and regional autonomy; Tamil socio-political, rationalist, pro-social justice) governments, under whose stewardship (management, administration, governance, leadership) Tamil Nadu has emerged as one of the front-runners (the leading candidate or entity in a contest, competition, or economic standing; leader, pioneer, vanguard, pacesetter) of the Indian economy by prioritising industrial development and socio-economic (relating to or concerned with the interaction of social and economic factors; social and economic, welfare-oriented, developmental, societal-financial) equity (fairness, justice, egalitarianism, impartiality).
