The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major change in how Class 12 answer sheets will be evaluated. Starting from the 2026 board exams, CBSE will use On-Screen Marking (OSM) to check Class 12 answer books digitally. This step aims to make the evaluation process faster, more transparent, and more accurate.

In an official notice sent to all affiliated schools, CBSE confirmed that digital evaluation will apply only to Class 12 answer sheets for now. Class 10 answer books will still be checked manually in the traditional physical mode during the 2026 exams.
Every year, CBSE conducts board exams for nearly 44 lakh students across India and 26 other countries. The board said that introducing OSM is part of its ongoing effort to modernise the examination system and speed up the evaluation process.
Key Benefits of On-Screen Marking (OSM)
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Fewer Errors | Reduces totalling mistakes and manual intervention |
| Faster Evaluation | Speeds up the checking process with more teacher participation |
| No Post-Result Verification | Eliminates the need to recheck marks after results are declared |
| Convenience for Teachers | Teachers can evaluate answer scripts from their own schools |
| Cost Savings | Cuts transportation time and costs |
| Less Manpower Needed | Reduces staff required for physical verification |
| Wider Participation | Involves teachers from all affiliated schools, including those abroad |
| Eco-Friendly | Supports paperless and environmentally sustainable practices |
CBSE has also pointed out that teachers won't need to travel to evaluation centres. They can check answer sheets from their own schools, which means their regular teaching work won't be disrupted.
Infrastructure Requirements for Schools
To make sure the system runs smoothly, CBSE has asked all affiliated schools to keep the following infrastructure ready:
| Requirement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Computer Labs | Must have public static IPs as per affiliation by-laws |
| Devices | PCs or laptops with Windows OS |
| RAM & Storage | Adequate capacity for smooth operation |
| Web Browser | Updated to the latest version |
| PDF Reader | Adobe Reader installed |
| Internet Speed | Minimum 2 Mbps connectivity |
| Power Supply | Uninterrupted electricity backup |
How CBSE Plans to Prepare Schools and Teachers
CBSE isn't leaving schools on their own to figure out the new system. The board has shared a clear plan to ensure everyone is well-prepared before the process begins.
Teachers with OASIS IDs have been asked to log in and explore the system in advance. CBSE will also conduct multiple dry runs so that teachers can practice before the actual evaluation starts. Along with this, the board will organise training sessions, set up a dedicated call centre for resolving issues, and release instructional videos to guide evaluators through the process.
CBSE has assured that detailed instructions for each step will be shared separately and well ahead of time. The board said this early communication is meant to give schools enough time to arrange the required infrastructure and prepare their staff for the transition.
