The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a big step in India's school education system. Now after class 9 and 10, some subjects will be taught at basic and advanced levels in class 11 and 12 as well.

This decision has been taken in line with the guidelines of the New Education Policy (NEP 2020) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCFSE 2023). Its aim is to give students the freedom to choose subjects according to their abilities, interests and career goals.

Currently, CBSE offers Mathematics subject at two levels – Standard and Basic – in Class 10. Both levels are based on the same syllabus, but the Basic level exam is relatively easier. Now a similar model has been implemented for Science and Social Sciences in Class 9 and 10, which will be effective from the 2026-27 session.

STEM Subjects will be Available at two levels in Class 11-12

Now CBSE is preparing to introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects at two levels in class 11 and 12. This change is likely to start from the 2026-27 academic session. For example, the subject of mathematics will be introduced at the basic and advanced level in class 11, so that students who do not want to study mathematics further in future can study it at an easier level.

Implementation will be Done as per Textbooks

The implementation of this scheme will depend on the availability of new textbooks of NCERT. NCERT has so far released new books for classes 1–4 and 6–7. Books for classes 9 and 11 will be made available by the end of 2025, after which studies will be possible at two levels in these classes.

This move by CBSE gives students the flexibility to choose which subjects they want to study at what level. For example, a student can study Mathematics at the basic level and Science at the advanced level, which will give them flexibility in studies and help them prepare for their career. This will also reduce the academic stress of students.

What will be the Format of the Exam and Result?

According to sources, CBSE is still deciding how the advanced or basic level will be shown in the board exam results. One option could be that advanced level students are given additional sections in the question paper.

Positive Response seen in Pilot Project

CBSE had run a pilot project in some private schools last year in which class 9 students were taught mathematics, science and social sciences at the advanced level. The evaluation revealed that the students showed interest in the advanced level and performed better.

This decision of CBSE will help students to understand the subjects in depth, decide their career direction and reduce mental stress.

The advanced level in social sciences will benefit students in understanding historical events, economic system and geography in depth, while the advanced level in science will strengthen preparation in fields like engineering and medical.
