Assam Board declares evaluation formula for state boards examinees

Assam Board has declared an evaluation formula for class 10th and 12th board examinees. However, the students have been given the option to appear in the special board exams to be held tentatively date by September 15.

The government also said the results of both class 10 and class 12 board examination would be declared by July 31st.

Making this announcement here on Thursday, state education minister Ranoj Pegu said if the Covid situation does not improve in September, the exams would be held even in 2022.
“Interested candidates can appear in the 10 and 12 class state board exams in case they are not satisfied with the evaluation system announced today,” he said.

For some government jobs, merit assessment is done on the basis of marks scored by a student in physical class 10th and 12th Assam boards. Pegu said in exams like Teachers’ Eligibility Test, the marks to be given thorough the newly adopted formula declared due to the pandemic would not be applicable.

“For improvement and keeping in mind the future examinations for jobs, we advise students to appear in the special board exams to be held later,” he added.

As per the formula, assessment of class 12th candidates of arts and science streams having practical subjects wise will be done with 50 per cent weightage to be calculated from best three subjects in the class 10 board. Another 30 marks will be calculated from the marks obtained by the candidates on the basis of the practical examination conducted by the institutions. While 10 marks will be calculated on the basis of marks obtained in class tests, unit tests, annual exams, pre-test, assignment and project works as well as attendance during the academic sessions 2019-2021, final 10 marks will be allotted on the basis of consideration of the marks obtained out of 90 in previous three components and 10 per cent of marks secured out of 90.

For non-practical subjects in arts and commerce too, 50 per cent weightage is being given in the best three of the subjects in the 10 class board. Forty marks will be calculated on the basis marks obtained by the students in the class tests, unit tests, annual exam, pre-test, assignment and project works. Also, attendance during the academic sessions 2019-2021 will be considered. Also 10 marks will be allotted on the basis of marks scored out of 90 in earlier components and 10 per cent of marks secured out of the total.

Similarly, for vocational stream in 12th, 50 % weightage will come from class 10 boards. Maximum 40 per cent marks can be allotted from the practical examination conducted by the institutions, while 10th class marks be allotted on the basis of marks obtained by the students out of 90 in earlier two components and 10th percent of marks secured out of 90 will be allotted accordingly.

The nine-member panel constituted for the task decided that the results be announced maintaining the division obtained by the students as per usual norms. However, there should not be any provision of announcing of star-mark holder or letter marks indication in the merit records for class 12th. There will be no declaration of merit rank for this year and names of students securing highest marks in any subject won’t be declared officially. “It is also recommended that there will be no provision for re-checking of answers scripts since there is no physical exams held this year. However, students’ grievance of any error(s) reported will be endorsed,” the panel said.

To evaluate the class 10 examinees, 40 per cent weightage has been given on marks secured by the candidates in theory portion of each subjects wise in their class 9th annual exam. Another 40 per cent weightage will come from marks secured in theory part of each subject wise in pre-board or revisionary test of 10 class held this year.The remaining 20% will mainly come from attendance, assignment and any other internal exams held this academic year, though the marks awarded must be consistent with the marks obtained by a student in class 9th.

The panel headed by educationist Alok Buragohain stated that there should be consistency in result of a school. “Considering the overall results of the last three years, a variation of maximum upto 10% will be permissible so far assessment of the candidates by the respective schools is considered,” he said. Upto 10 per cent variation will be compared to highest pass percentage secured by the candidates in a school in any one of the previous three years.

For those schools which don’t have class 10 data, as some of them could not conduct any examination due to pandemic since last year, 70 per cent weightage will come from class 9th theory marks. Another 30% weightage will be counted from the performance in theory portion of subject wise in home assignments or unit tests or any other exam held in the current year. This, however, should also be consistent with the class 9th marks scored by a student.
