IIT Bombay has started a new BTech degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR). This special course has already attracted top students, with admission ranks from 1,042 to 1,726.
Prof. Jayendran Venkateswaran, head of the IEOR department at IIT Bombay, explains more about the course and its benefits.
What is IEOR?
IEOR focuses on making industrial and service systems work better. This includes using math and decision models like optimization, simulation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. These skills are useful in many areas, such as manufacturing, e-commerce, logistics, technology, automotive, airlines, retail, and financial services. Job roles for IEOR graduates include data analyst, business/supply chain analyst, financial/risk analyst, AI engineer, consultant, operations manager, industrial engineer, and operations researcher.
Why India Needs IEOR Professionals
As India aims to become a major supply chain hub, there's a growing need for skilled workers to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency. The IEOR program helps meet this need.
A Unique Program in India
IIT Bombay's IEOR program combines the best of industrial engineering and operations research. While other IITs and NITs offer similar programs, IIT Bombay's BTech in IEOR stands out. Similar programs can be found at top international universities like UC Berkeley, Columbia University, Cornell, and the National University of Singapore.
History of IEOR at IIT Bombay
IE and OR have been part of IIT Bombay since 1976 with MTech and PhD programs. An MSc in Operations Research started in 2009, and a UG Minor in IEOR was introduced in 2016. Since 2019, a Dual Degree with MTech in IEOR has been available for IIT Bombay BTech students. The department offers 15-20 courses each year in areas like optimization, probability models, AI/ML, and operations analysis.
Why a BTech in IEOR?
The demand for skills in applied mathematics, statistical methods, computing, and data-driven decision-making has grown. Since the 2010s, more UG students have shown interest in PG-level IEOR courses. Placements in analytics have also increased, signaling industry demand. Support from alumni and industry surveys led to the creation of the BTech in IEOR.
Infrastructure for IEOR at IIT Bombay
The IEOR department has its own building with advanced computer servers, a GPU server, computer labs, a library, reading spaces, and student labs. New UG labs on Digital Enterprise Systems will be added for hands-on experience. A new building will also be constructed to expand the facilities.
Further Studies in IEOR
Graduates with a BTech in IEOR have many options for further studies. Leading universities worldwide, including other IITs, offer advanced degrees (MS/MTech/ME/PhD) in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. Students can also pursue masters in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Financial Engineering, Health Systems, Business Analytics, and related fields. An MBA or MMS from various IIMs is another option.
IIT Bombay's new BTech in IEOR equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in various industries, supporting India's growth as a global supply chain hub.
