The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced several major changes for the 2025-26 and 2026 academic sessions. These changes will directly impact students, teachers, and schools. The new policies are being implemented to improve the examination system, attendance rules, assessment, and quality of education. Let's take a closer look at all the important changes related to the CBSE Board Exams 2026.

👉 Official Notice

On August 4, the CBSE clarified that 75% attendance will now be mandatory to appear for the Class 10 and 12 board exams. This rule will apply to all students to ensure regular classroom learning. Additionally, the board has implemented a basic and advanced level system for science and social sciences at the secondary level. This model will be extended to STEM subjects in Class 11 from 2026-27.

A major change has been made to the examination system for Class 10. From 2026, the board will implement a two-term examination system. The first main examination will be held in February 2026, while the second examination will be held in May 2026. This move has been taken to provide more opportunities to students and reduce exam pressure. However, CBSE has also clarified that the option of taking additional subjects will no longer be available to private candidates.

To improve student learning, CBSE has decided to introduce Open-Book Assessment (OBA) from Class 9. This change will be implemented from 2026-27 and has been prepared based on a pilot study conducted in 2023. This method will allow students to focus on understanding and analysis rather than rote memorization.

Special provisions have also been made for students representing India in sports and Olympiads. Class 10 students will be able to participate in the two-examination system, with only the second examination to be held in May 2026. The policy for Class 12 will remain the same, but if the exam clashes with an international event, the board will conduct an alternative exam.

The CBSE has also emphasized quality and transparency in education. Schools have been directed to identify students' mother tongues and provide education in the mother tongue or regional language from pre-primary to Class 2. Furthermore, all affiliated schools have been mandated to install high-resolution CCTV cameras with audio-visual recording facilities.

Considering student health, the board has ordered the establishment of "sugar boards" in schools to prevent excessive sugar consumption among children. Additionally, the CBSE has launched an initiative to develop educational podcasts and digital content to provide guidance and counseling to students, parents, and teachers.
