The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made a significant change to the process for issuing Migration Certificates for Class 10 and Class 12 students from 2025. Under this new rule, students will no longer be issued hard copies of their Migration Certificates.
Instead, all certificates will be issued digitally through DigiLocker. This move is part of CBSE's broader initiative to promote digital transformation in education and make documents easier for students to access.
Complete Information on DigiLocker Migration Certificates
CBSE has clarified that starting with the 2025 board examinations, Migration Certificates will only be available in digital form. This digital certificate will be completely legal and valid, allowing students to apply for admission to Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs).
The main reason for this change is the University Grants Commission (UGC) directive advising all universities and colleges to accept degrees, marksheets, and other academic records issued through the National Academic Depository (NAD)/DigiLocker as authentic documents.
Key Points for Students
Free Certificate: Most importantly, students will not be charged any fee for the Digital Migration Certificate. The previous fee has been waived.
Automatic Availability: After the exam results are declared, the Migration Certificate will be automatically uploaded to the student's DigiLocker account.
Access and Activation: Students will be issued a six-digit access code to access DigiLocker. Schools will be responsible for distributing this code to all relevant students.
Hard Copy Option: If a student still requires a printed or hard copy of the migration certificate, they can apply for it through the Duplicate Academic Document System (DADS) portal available on the CBSE website. According to the Board, out of over 1.7 million students who appeared for the 2025 Class 12 examinations, only about 38,000 students applied for a hard copy, indicating the growing acceptance of the digital medium.
This initiative will not only help students access their documents securely, anywhere, and at any time, but will also eliminate the need for physical paperwork, which is a positive step for the environment. This decision by the CBSE is in line with the Digital India vision, which aims to make education and administration more transparent, efficient, and paperless.
