Data doubts: On the latest IIP dataset

Data doubts: On the latest IIP dataset

Data doubts: On the latest IIP dataset

The latest IIP dataset raises more questions than it answers

India’s latest industrial growth figures (वृद्धि का आँकड़ा) show that, contrary to (के विपरीत, के विरुद्ध) global trends (प्रवृत्ति, रुझान) and overall perception (धारणा, समझ), the country’s industrial output (औद्योगिक उत्पादन) is getting stronger. Notably (विशेष रूप से, उल्लेखनीय रूप से), the data show a quick bounce-back (a rapid recovery from a difficult situation or decline; rebound, rally, recovery, revival) in industrial performance after the initial hit from the West Asia crisis (पश्चिम एशिया संकट). However (हालाँकि, तथापि), the new data also raise some important concerns about the composition (formation, structure, organization, constitution) of the growth, the systems (प्रणाली, व्यवस्था) behind the recent data upgrades (an enhancement, improvement, or modernization of the way data is collected, processed, and analyzed; data enhancement, statistical improvement), and the need for further improvements. Growth in the Index of Industrial Production (औद्योगिक उत्पादन सूचकांक) hit (impact, blow, damage, effect) a five-month high of 5.1% in May 2026, up from the 4.9% growth seen in April, which itself was a substantial (पर्याप्त, उल्लेखनीय, काफी) improvement over the performance in March — the first full month after the West Asia crisis began. Within this, the manufacturing sector grew at a relatively (तुलनात्मक रूप से, अपेक्षाकृत) robust (मजबूत, सुदृढ़) 5.5% in May, albeit (यद्यपि) slower than in April. One view (opinion, perspective, thought, viewpoint) is that this is due to (because of, owing to, as a result of, on account of) a revival (recovery, improvement, betterment, restoration) in domestic consumption (the use of goods and services by households within a country; domestic demand, household spending, internal consumption), since the consumer durables (manufactured goods (such as TV, fridge, AC, motorbike, car, etc.) designed to last for a relatively long time and not depleted quickly by use; long-lasting goods, household appliances, durable goods) and non-durables sectors also grew at multi-month (spanning, extending over, or involving several months; lasting multiple months) highs. Consumer durables, especially, have done well in April and May. However, the contrary (opposite, opposing, contrasting, contradictory) argument is that domestic demand (requirement, need) is in fact (actually, in reality, really, as a matter of fact) not doing well, and it is export growth (an increase in the volume or value of goods and services sold by a country to other countries) that is leading to higher production. This is bolstered (strengthen, support, reinforce, boost) by the fact that (used to refer to a particular situation or truth that must be acknowledged; the reality that, the truth that, given that) GST revenues from domestic transactions have grown slower over the last six months than in 2025-26 and the year before that. Merchandise (goods, commodities, produce, wares, product) exports, on the other hand (as an alternative, conversely, in contrast, from another point of view), hit a four-year high in April followed (come after, result from, succeed, happen after) by an all-time (unsurpassed, unmatched, unprecedented, unexcelled) high in May. It would certainly (absolutely, definitely, undoubtedly, undeniably) be welcome (pleasing, agreeable, encouraging, positive) if India’s industry has global demand to fill, but the fact that more of this demand is not coming from within the country is a cause for concern (a reason to worry, grounds for anxiety, a source of stress, a point of apprehension). The economy is already hostage (a person or entity seized or held by someone in order to compel another party to meet certain demands (used figuratively here to mean vulnerable or captive); captive, prisoner, pawn, victim) to world events.

The May IIP data were also accompanied (occur with, be associated with, go along with, pair with) by a note from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) (Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) came into existence as an independent Ministry on 15th October 1999 after the merger of the Department of Statistics and the Department of Programme Implementation. The executive ministry of the Government of India that acts as the central authority for the collection, compilation, analysis, and dissemination of official statistical data, while also monitoring the implementation of major government projects and programmes) stating that it had made a major change to the methodology (procedure, method, system, approach) for computing growth for some sectors. It had abandoned (give up, drop, discard, reject) the Wholesale Price Index (a macroeconomic indicator compiled by the Office of Economic Adviser (OEA) that measures and tracks the changes in the price of goods traded in bulk by wholesale businesses to other businesses before they reach consumers) as its chosen deflator (a statistical factor designed to remove the effect of inflation, thereby providing a measure of real changes in economic output or value; economic metric, price deflator) to estimate the value of production in favour of (in support of, to the advantage of, backing, promoting) the new Producer Price Index (an economic indicator that measures the average changes in prices received by domestic producers for their output, acting as a key measure of inflation at the wholesale level). This is a more accurate approach. But it did not, however, answer why this change was implemented (execute, apply, put into effect, carry out) belatedly (tardily, late, overdue, sluggishly) and not when the new series of data (a freshly compiled and updated set of statistical figures or information, often using a revised base year or improved methodology. a revamped Index of Industrial Production (IIP) series was rolled out from June 1 with the base year updated to 2022-23. The new series will also replace the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with the Producer Price Index (PPI) for IIP calculations. The new series expands industrial coverage to sectors such as rare earth minerals, renewable energy, gas supply, water supply, and waste management) was introduced on June 1. It suggests (indicate, point to, imply, denote) an unusually (abnormally, surprisingly, atypically, uncommonly) unsystematic (unmethodical, disorganized, random, haphazard) approach by MoSPI. The strong growth in the IIP also does not reconcile (to find a way in which two situations or beliefs that are opposed to each other can agree and exist together; harmonize, resolve, balance, align) with the fact that the Index of Eight Core Sectors (a monthly production volume index compiled and released by the Office of the Economic Adviser, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, that measures the combined and individual performance of production in eight foundational industries in India (coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers, steel, cement, and electricity)) — a separate government measure (standard, yardstick, benchmark, gauge, indicator) of industrial growth — grew at its second-lowest rate in 21 months in May. The core sector index (another term for the Index of Eight Core Sectors; a statistical gauge tracking the output of foundational industries crucial to the overall economy) is still outdated (old-fashioned, out of date, obsolete, antiquated) while the other major indices have been recently updated, but such a discrepancy (difference, inconsistency, variance, disparity) nevertheless (however, yet, nonetheless, even so) raises questions about what exactly is being measured (calculate, compute, gauge, quantify, evaluate).
