JEE Advanced Toppers Tips : How to Optimize Study Hours Before Exams, According to an IIT Delhi Student

Samarth Patel, despite coming from a family of doctors, chose a different path and became an IITian. His journey to convince his parents was not easy, but his determination as a sportsperson led him to success.

In his own words, “I was not a bright student until Class 8, but I had a knack for physics and mathematics. With my parents’ support, I decided to pursue engineering.” His hard work paid off, and he scored an impressive 99.9986 percentile in the JEE Main 2023.

Samarth’s preparation for the JEE began in Class 9, where he actively participated in various olympiads. His interest in physics drove him to enjoy solving numerical problems. By Class 10, he opted for coaching to align his preparation with the requirements of the JEE.

As he progressed to Class 11, Samarth excelled in both physics and mathematics. His focus then shifted to chemistry. He dedicated eight hours daily to self-study, allowing for breaks and maintaining a flexible schedule around school exams, leisure, and social activities. This balanced approach enabled him to study efficiently and grasp concepts thoroughly.

In Class 12, he intensified his preparation, allocating time for all subjects with a special emphasis on chemistry. Solving previous years’ questions and using coaching materials significantly improved his readiness. Samarth’s advice? “Relaxing and reducing study hours a few days before the exam helps stay calm and perform well.” His All India Rank (AIR) was 77.

Despite facing pressure, Samarth performed well. An incident where he reached the examination hall late due to rainfall caused some unwanted mistakes in Paper 1, but he made up for it in Paper 2. Before the exam, he strategically planned to attempt chemistry first, followed by physics and mathematics.

For aspiring JEE candidates, Samarth recommends using NCERT books, practicing previous year’s questions, and taking mock tests. His thorough preparation even allowed him to focus on mock tests during JEE Advanced, where his syllabus was already covered. Samarth Patel’s dedication and smart approach paid off, and he was among the five students selected to visit Australia for an International Science Call.
