No Indian institution made it to the top 200 in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2026, released on Tuesday. IIT Delhi, India's top-ranked institution, dropped to rank 205 from last year's 171.
IIT Bombay followed at global rank 236, down one spot from 235 last year. IIT Kharagpur also slipped to rank 236 from 202 last year.

Indian Institutions See Rankings Drop
Seven out of the top 10 Indian institutions saw their rankings drop this year compared to last year. Besides IITs Delhi, Bombay, and Kharagpur, these include:
- IIT Madras - Dropped from 277 last year to 305 this year
- IIT Kanpur - Fell from 245 last year to 310 this year
- Indian Institute of Science - Saw a steep fall from rank 376 last year to 462 this year

The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability evaluates institutions on their environmental and social impact, and governance. It looks at:
- Environmental research impact on sustainable development goals
- Academic reputation in environmental education
- Alumni impact in the field of environmental sustainability

Why Did Indian Institutions Drop?
QS explained that environmental sustainability is one area where global peers have been outperforming the IITs. This metric measures alumni impact and staff perception of climate change commitment.

Higher Competition This Year
QS pointed to increased competition this year with more than 250 universities appearing in the rankings for the first time. The organization added that the rankings are comparative. They don't necessarily mean universities are doing worse in these areas. It means peers are improving at a faster pace.
Overall Rankings Overview
The rankings feature around 2,000 universities worldwide. Lund University in Sweden took the top position, followed by the University of Toronto.
Indian Universities' Performance Summary
Out of 103 universities from India featured in this year's edition:
- 32 have improved their ranking
- 15 retain the same rank as last year
- 30 have dropped in rankings
This shows mixed performance by Indian institutions in sustainability metrics compared to global peers.
