The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has announced that the results of the Class 12 first-semester state board exams will be declared by October 31.
Council Chairman Chiranjib Bhattacharya stated that there may be some delay in the declaration of results as the scanning of OMR sheets is ongoing. However, he expressed full confidence that the results will be declared by October 31.
Conducting the Class 12 Semester 1 Exam
The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has introduced the Class 12 semester-based system this year. The Class 12 first-semester exams began on September 8, 2026, and concluded on Monday. In total, an estimated 6.6 lakh students took the exam, of which approximately 56.03 percent were girls. This time, the exam was conducted using OMR sheets, making it a new format.
This is a significant step for the state as this is the first semester-based exam for Class 12 students. This new exam format incorporates multiple-choice questions (MCQs) aimed at enhancing students' thinking and reasoning skills. The next semester's exams will be held in February 2027. Students' overall rankings and grades will be determined based on both semesters.
Possibility of Delay in Declaration of Results
Bhattacharya stated that over 3.8 million OMR sheets are being scanned, and the festival holidays may cause some delay in the publication of results. However, the Council has clarified that the results will be declared by October 31.
Benefits of the New Exam Format
The new exam format will primarily consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in Semester 1 and 3, focusing on enhancing students' thinking and reasoning skills. Meanwhile, Semester 2 and 4 will incorporate SAQs (Short Answer Questions) and DQs (Developmental Quotient) to enhance students' writing abilities.
Abolition of the traditional examination system last year
This year, a new semester system has been introduced for Class 12 final examinations in West Bengal, ending the annual system that had been in place since 1978. This year's annual examination was held in March, and the semester-based system has been implemented since then.
