The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has released a clarification notice regarding the question pattern for Semester 4 of the upcoming Higher Secondary (HS) examinations.

The council has released a detailed subject-wise question paper pattern for the upcoming HS exams on its website — wbchse.wb.gov.in.

Key Points of the '2x' Formula

According to the notification, the council will implement a "2x formula" for providing options in question papers. Under this system, if students have to solve x number of questions from a subject, they will be given 2x the number of options.

For example, if a student has to answer two questions from a particular unit, four optional questions will be available – all from the same subject.

For example, the sample question pattern included topics such as "Learning and Learning Mechanisms," "Mental Health and Wellbeing," "Educational Technology," and "Statistics in Education." Each topic provided a specific number of questions and their corresponding options for short-answer (Type 1 and Type 2) and descriptive-type questions.

The rule will apply to most subjects.

The Council further emphasized that this 2x formula will apply to most subjects, with only a few exceptional cases deviating from this pattern. To clear up any confusion regarding the exam structure, the Council plans to release subject-wise question patterns along with this clarification.

A Glimpse of the New Semester System

In mid-April, the WBCHSE announced the adoption of the semester system for grades 11 and 12 in state-run and state-aided schools.

Under the new system, the higher secondary or 10+2 curriculum is now divided into four parts—Semesters 1, 2, 3, and 4. Grade 11 is divided into Semester 1 and 2, while Grade 12 is divided into Semester 3 and 4.

The third semester exams were held between September 8 and 22, and the fourth semester exams will be held from February 12 to February 27 next year.

Students are advised to regularly monitor the WBCHSE's official website for the latest and most accurate information. This clarification will help students understand the exam pattern and enable them to prepare for their final exams more effectively.
