Bogged down: On the U.S.-Iran conflict escalation
The United States should revive (पुनर्जीवित करना) the MoU with Iran to cut its losses
Iran’s attacks on American warships (युद्धपोत, सैन्य पोत) outside the Strait of Hormuz (a strategically important strait between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, forming a critical chokepoint for global oil transit) and U.S. retaliatory (जवाबी, प्रतिशोधात्मक) strikes (हमला, सैन्य हमला) on three Iranian oil tankers (a large ship designed for the bulk transport of oil; petroleum tanker, bulk carrier) in the Gulf waters (the waters of the Persian Gulf and surrounding maritime areas crucial for global shipping and oil trade; Persian Gulf, Arab Gulf) mark (दर्शाना, संकेत करना) another phase (चरण, अवस्था) of escalation (बढ़ोतरी, तीव्रता में वृद्धि) in the six-month-long war between the two countries. After the collapse (पतन, विफलता) of the June 17 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (समझौता ज्ञापन), which sought to resolve (समाधान करना, सुलझाना) the conflict (संघर्ष, टकराव) through talks (वार्ता, बातचीत), both sides have carried out (execute, perform, implement, accomplish) tit-for-tat (जैसे को तैसा, जवाबी) attacks. Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump appeared (प्रतीत होना, दिखाई देना) to shift (change, alter, adjust, move) the focus of his Iran policy from military strikes (a sudden military attack on a specific target; armed assault, offensive, bombardment, raid) to economic warfare (an economic strategy based on the use of measures to weaken the economy of another state; financial war, trade war, economic blockade, economic sanction), announcing new sanctions (a threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule, especially an economic penalty applied by one country to another; penalty, punishment, embargo, ban) and tightening (make more strict or rigorous; toughen, strengthen, escalate, reinforce) the U.S. Navy’s blockade (siege, barrier, barricade, restriction) of Iran’s ports. The U.S. also managed to get some oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz through a southern route along the Omani coast (the coastline of Oman, a country on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz). But Iran, which still maintains (continue, keep, preserve, sustain) its chokehold (a tight grip, control, stranglehold, dominance) over the waterway (a river, canal, or other route for travel by water; navigable channel, shipping lane, water route, canal), continued to target vessels (a ship or large boat; ship, boat, craft, watercraft) taking the southern route. Unable to find a way out (a method of dealing with or escaping from a difficult situation; solution, exit, escape route, loophole), the U.S. returned to strikes, triggering (cause an event or situation to happen or exist; prompt, generate, spark, provoke) Iranian attacks on American bases (a place used as a center of operations by the armed forces; headquarters, camp, station, post) in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. The latest escalation is significant because it is the first time in months that Iran has attacked U.S. military vessels (warship, naval ship, combat ship, patrol boat), apparently (seemingly, evidently, outwardly, ostensibly) seeking (attempt to find or achieve something; try, attempt, aim, strive) to break (to overcome or force one’s way out of a restriction; breach, violate, force through, overcome) the blockade. By targeting Iranian tankers (a ship, road vehicle, or aircraft for carrying liquids, especially petroleum, in bulk; oil carrier, bulk carrier, transport ship, freighter) in retaliation (counterattack, reprisal, revenge, vengeance), the U.S. has also crossed a red line. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (a multi-service primary branch of the Iranian Armed Forces established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, responsible for protecting the country’s Islamic republic system and conducting unconventional warfare) announced that it had struck six vessels in the Gulf — three tankers and three U.S.-linked ships — in retaliation for (as a response or counterattack to an action; in response to, in revenge for, as a reprisal for, to avenge) the American attacks on oil tankers, and vowed (solemnly promise to do a specified thing; promise, pledge, swear, commit) to expand (increase, enlarge, broaden, widen) their strikes against U.S. ships.
The central focus (the main or most important point of attention; core objective, primary aim, focal point, main goal) of the war today, which the U.S. and Israel launched on February 28 in the name of (for the sake of or using the excuse of; on behalf of, for the sake of, under the guise of, by authority of) destroying Iran’s nuclear programme and bringing about (cause something to happen; cause, produce, create, generate) regime change (the replacement of one administration or government by another, especially by means of military force; overthrow, coup, government overthrow, leadership change) in Tehran, is the Strait of Hormuz. That Tehran forced the U.S. to fight over (to argue or engage in conflict regarding a specific issue or object; dispute, squabble over, quarrel over, battle for) a problem it created rather than (instead of; as opposed to, in place of, as an alternative to, instead of) pursue (follow or seek to attain or accomplish a goal; follow, chase, seek, strive for) Washington’s original objective (goal, aim, target, purpose) is, in itself (inherently, intrinsically, by its very nature, fundamentally), a strategic victory (a win that achieves long-term or overall goals, rather than just immediate tactical success; major triumph, decisive win, long-term success, crucial accomplishment) for Iran. The frequent (recurring, repeated, periodic, constant) clashes (a violent confrontation; conflict, fight, skirmish, confrontation) and counter-clashes (a retaliatory conflict; counter-attack, retaliatory fight, reciprocal skirmish, revenge attack) underscore (highlight, emphasize, underline, stress) two points. First, the U.S. does not have a clear theory of victory (a strategic concept or plan explaining how a war or conflict can be won; winning strategy, strategic concept, success model, roadmap to victory). Neither its military effort nor its economic warfare has forced Iran to change its position (stance, standpoint, viewpoint, attitude). The Strait (referring to the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage of water connecting two larger areas of water; channel, waterway, inlet) remains unsafe, while the toll (the cost or damage resulting from something; cost, damage, loss, penalty) on the global economy is mounting (increase, grow, rise, escalate). What the Trump administration (the executive branch or government leadership of a president or state; government, executive, regime, authority) appears to be doing is ‘mowing the lawn’, taken straight out of the Israeli playbook (a set of rules or strategies; strategy guide, plan, tactics, methodology), with the aim of blunting (weaken, dull, soften, diminish) Iran’s attack capabilities. But each time, Iran retaliates (counterattack, fight back, hit back, reciprocate), pursuing its own ‘debasification (a strategy aimed at reducing or eliminating the enemy’s military bases and infrastructure; infrastructure destruction, base elimination, strategic degradation, base reduction)’ strategy (a plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim; plan, tactic, scheme, approach), pushing U.S. military presence away from its immediate (nearest in space or relationship; nearest, closest, adjacent, next) periphery (the outer limits or edge of an area or object; edge, margin, boundary, border). Second, Iran, despite (in spite of, regardless of, notwithstanding, undeterred by) its economic woes (troubles, difficulties, problems, hardships), has emerged more assertive (confident, forceful, decisive, bold). The more the U.S. seeks to trap (catch or keep someone in a place and prevent them from escaping; corner, catch, ensnare, confine) Iran in an economic gridlock (deadlock, stalemate, standstill, impasse), the less risk-averse (reluctant to take risks; cautious, conservative, careful, prudent) Tehran appears to be. As both sides seek escalation dominance (supremacy, control, authority, command), the war risks (endanger, jeopardize, imperil, hazard) spiralling out of control. America is visibly (noticeably, clearly, obviously, evidently) under pressure (facing or enduring a difficult situation or demanding conditions; stressed, strained, burdened, pushed). Mr. Trump has to accept the cold fact (an undeniable and often unpleasant truth; harsh reality, undeniable truth, plain truth, inescapable fact) that he has lost this war and return to reviving the MoU before it is too late (beyond the time when something could have been done or prevented; past the point of no return, belated, delayed, past saving).
