Bold gamble: On announcement of Channi as Punjab CM candidate

The projection (प्रक्षेपण) of Channi as CM candidate was forced on (पर मजबूर, लादना) Congress, but is the right decision

If the elevation (पदोन्नति, उदय) of Charanjit Singh Channi as Chief Minister in September 2021 was an accidental (आकस्मिक, अस्थिर, अनियोजित) outcome (परिणाम, निष्कर्ष, नतीजा) of internal rivalries (प्रतियोगिता, प्रतिद्वंद्विता) in the Congress, the party’s announcement that he would continue in the post if it wins the Assembly election is a bold gamble (जुआ, जोखिम). The Congress has been reticent (reserved, introverted, restrained, uncommunicative/close-lipped) in projecting (परियोजना, वर्तमान, प्रचार) a singular leader in any State, and has often taken the plea (दलील, दावा, स्पष्टीकरण) that it believed in collective (सामूहिक, संयुक्त) leadership. The announcement of a CM candidate, though not unprecedented (अभूतपूर्व, अनोखा), is rare for the Congress, and in this instance necessitated (आवश्यक करना, अनिवार्य बना देना, जरूरत) by the uniquely volatile (परिवर्तनशील, अनिश्चित, अशांत) social dynamic (गतिशील, बुनियादी) in Punjab at the moment. Entrenched (establish something firmly; anchor, settle, embed) social alignments (संरेखण, गठबंधन, साझेदारी) in the State appear to be unravelling (fall apart, come apart, fail, collapse, go wrong; undo, untie), and the Congress is trying to knit (unite, join, combine, merge (together)) together a viable (reasonable, practical, logical, sensible, effective) electoral majority, with a Dalit face as its axis (a central part). Punjab has close to 32% population of the Scheduled Caste community, while the Jat Sikh population is over 20%. But since 1977, the State has never seen a non-Jat Sikh Chief Minister — be it of the Congress party or the Shiromani Akali Dal, indicating the political dominance (domination, superiority, authority, influence) of the Jat Sikh community. Giani Zail Singh was the last non-Jat Sikh Chief Minister of Punjab between 1972-77.

The Congress has usually shied away from pronounced (noticeable, marked, strong, conspicuous, striking, distinct, prominent, notable) social justice (the equal access to wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society) politics, and in that sense (from that point of view), this is an audacious (bold, adventurous, fearless, confident) move (step, action, act, measure) which will have ripple effects (an event (or a process/action) that causes several other events to happen indirectly one after the other; secondary/indirect effect, consequence/implication, chain of events) in its strategy (plan of action (in order to achieve a more expansive set of political, economic, and security interests)) elsewhere too. Party leader Rahul Gandhi is driving (cause something to happen; prompt) a more accommodative (accommodating, friendly, cooperative, agreeable, amenable) caste politics, but the approach is evidently (obviously, palpably, seemingly, apparently) facing resistance (opposition, refusal, disinclination, reluctance, confrontation, defiance) from within the party and outside. Dalits in Punjab are not a homogeneous (uniform, identical/unvarying, similar) category. They are divided into 39 castes, clustered (congregate, gather, collect, group, come together, assemble (a group of people/things considered as a unit)) under different religions and sects locally called ‘Deras’. Mr. Channi belongs to (be a member of, be affiliated to, be associated with, be connected to, be linked to) the Ravidasia community of Dalits, which is a minuscule (very small, insignificant, negligible) population of the total Dalits. Whether he can galvanise a larger politics of aspiration (desire, hope, urge, wish) shared among all communities overlooked in the traditional power sharing models of the State remains an open question (an undetermined/undecided thing), but Mr. Channi does deserve (be entitled to, have a right to, earn, merit, warrant, justify, be worthy of) the support he has found from the party. He has not been long enough in power to be judged for his track record as CM, but Mr. Channi is a good story teller and has a good story — which are essential ingredients (constituent, part, component, element) for any successful politics. His prominence (standing, position, repute, importance, influence) will in all likelihood (very likely, most likely, very probably) set off (give rise to, cause, lead to, bring about, prompt) reactions from Jat Sikhs and upper caste Hindus, considerable segments (part, portion, section, constituent) of whom have been with the Congress. Opponents of the Congress — the Shiromani Akali Dal-BSP alliance, the BJP-led alliance, and the Aam Aadmi Party — will all try to inflame (provoke, intensify, incite; incense, anger, infuriate, exasperate) the resentment (bitterness, indignation, irritation, displeasure, dissatisfaction, discontentment) among these communities to corner the Congress. The Congress is accused of playing caste politics by promoting a Dalit, and it is notable the rotation of power among the dominant Jat Sikhs for decades rarely caused such concerns (anxiety, worry, disquiet, apprehension). Perhaps (maybe, possibly) that itself is proof that Mr. Channi deserved this chance.
