Eyes on ice: On the Nobel Prize for physics

The Nobel tradition (परंपरा, प्रथा) rewards (पुरस्कृत करना, पुरस्कार देना) individual talent in collective achievements (सामूहिक उपलब्धियाँ)

The Nobel Prize (नोबेल पुरस्कार) for physics to Francis Halzen recognises (मान्यता देना, स्वीकार करना) a clever idea: to use the Antarctic landmass (भू-भाग, विशाल भू-क्षेत्र) to detect one of the universe’s most elusive particles. Halzen’s efforts helped create the IceCube observatory, which went on to detect high-energy particles from astronomical (relating to the study of the universe and its contents; celestial, planetary, stellar, cosmic) sources thousands to billions of light-years away and transformed astronomy. Yet, the committee’s (समिति) decision to award Halzen alone also perpetuates (बनाए रखना, जारी रखना) a deleterious (हानिकारक, नुकसानदेह) tradition in how the institution (संस्था, संगठन) has been recognising scientific achievement (उपलब्धि, सफलता). The observatory (a research centre or facility equipped for observing and studying astronomical, atmospheric, or other scientific phenomena; research centre, research facility, scientific station, observation centre) consists of thousands of sensors (संवेदक) embedded (to fix an object firmly (and deeply); implant, insert, lodge, root) up to 2.5 kilometres beneath (के नीचे, के नीचे की ओर) the South Pole, connected by cables to a laboratory aboveground (जमीन के ऊपर, सतह पर). When subatomic particles (particles that are smaller than an atom and form part of atoms or exist independently in matter and radiation; examples include electrons, protons, neutrons, neutrinos, quarks, and photons) called neutrinos interact with atoms in the ice, reactions lead to a small flash of light. Sensors detect and record it, allowing scientists to reconstruct the incoming neutrino’s energy and direction. Since coming online in 2011, IceCube has detected neutrinos of extremely high energy, giving scientists stronger clues (hint, indication, sign, evidence) about the crucibles (a situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new; melting pot, testing ground, trial, severe test. In the context of the article, crucible refers to a challenging environment or situation in which scientific ideas, discoveries, and collaboration can develop and produce significant results) in which these particles were created, and strengthening (reinforce, fortify, consolidate, bolster) neutrino astronomy (the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole, astrophysics, cosmology, space science). The IceCube (The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a scientific research facility situated in Antarctica) collaboration consists of (to be composed or made up of; comprise, contain, include, encompass) over 400 experts from 14 countries, spanning (encompass, cover, include) astrophysics (the branch of astronomy concerned with the physical nature of stars and other celestial bodies; stellar physics, space science, astronomy, cosmology), engineering, and software development. Halzen’s leadership was necessary (essential, crucial, indispensable, vital) to create this entity (organisation, body, institution, establishment).

However, the need to build IceCube at its scale should also have rendered the collective nature of its success impossible to ignore. The Nobel Foundation’s statutes prohibit (forbid, ban, bar, outlaw) dividing each prize among (between) more than three individuals. So, in 2017 as well, the physics prize was awarded to three scientists for the detection (discovery) of gravitational waves (a ripple or disturbance in the fabric of space-time produced by the acceleration of massive cosmic objects, especially during violent astronomical events), which really required a collaboration (cooperation, partnership, teamwork, association) of hundreds of researchers. The rules that govern prizes are human arrangements (rules, conventions, or systems established by people; man-made conventions, artificial rules, societal constructs, human creations), and the Foundation’s choices (option, selection, decision, preference) are not explained away by its fealty (sworn loyalty to a lord (here used as loyalty to a tradition); loyalty, allegiance, faithfulness, obedience) to its traditions; in fact (actually, truly, indeed, really), its statutes allow prizes to be awarded to organisations as well — an option repeatedly overlooked. Every new science prize begins with distinguishing itself by identifying the ‘right’ laureates; the Nobel Prizes did so, too, until (till, up to, prior to, before) their accumulated (built up or gathered over a long period; accrued, gathered, built-up, collected) prestige (status, reputation, eminence, esteem) became so great that laureates were distinguished by receiving the prizes rather than (instead of, as opposed to, in place of, alternatively) distinguishing the prizes. Thus (as a result or consequence of this; therefore, consequently, hence, accordingly), even when (despite the fact that, in spite of, regardless of when, although) the prize-giving committee (awarding body, judging panel, selection committee, jury) follows (obey, observe, adhere to, comply with) an outdated (out of date or obsolete; old-fashioned, archaic, outmoded, obsolete) model (template, pattern, blueprint, framework) of scientific recognition, in the present instance by reinforcing the notion that exceptional scientific achievements can be cleanly attributed to (to regard something as being caused by someone or something; ascribe to, assign to, credit to, impute to) exceptional individuals, it suffers (to experience or be subjected to something bad or unpleasant; endure, experience, undergo, sustain) minimal (negligible, nominal, marginal, slight) reputational (relating to the public standing, status, or reputation of an entity; status-related, character-related, image-related, name-related) damage. The institution is using its prestige — owed to (to have something because of someone or something; attribute to, be indebted to, be obliged to, credit to) the science it celebrates (to honour or praise publicly; glorify, acclaim, applaud, commend) — to entrench (to establish an attitude, habit, or belief so firmly that change is very difficult; establish, settle, deeply root, implant) a distorted (misrepresented, twisted, skewed, warped) understanding (comprehension, grasp, perception, interpretation) of how science works, more so (to a greater degree or extent; especially, particularly, even more, increasingly) at a time (during a specific period or moment; during a period, at a point, in an era, simultaneously) when scientific progress increasingly (to an increasing extent; progressively, more and more, continuously, steadily) depends on (rely on, count on, hinge on, rest on) extensive (comprehensive, thorough, large-scale, widespread) cooperation. No man is an island (used to express that human beings do not thrive when isolated from others (or) human beings do not function in isolation and depend on community/collaboration; interconnected, interdependent, reliant on others, no one is self-sufficient, everyone needs others), least of all (especially not; certainly not, above all not, in particular not, by no means) in science.
