Forced get-together: On the AIADMK-BJP alliance

Political expediency (लाभप्रदता, सुविधा) dictated (आदेश देना, हुक्म चलाना) the coming together (एकत्र होना, मिलना) of AIADMK and BJP

Union Home Minister Amit Shah displayed political urgency when he formalised the BJP’s reunion with the AIADMK, a year ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election. A cautious (सावधान, सतर्क) Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the leader of the AIADMK, was also persuaded (राज़ी करना, मनाना) to endorse (समर्थन करना, पुष्टि करना) a pre-poll agreement to form a coalition government. Coming just days after the AIADMK’s Rajya Sabha MPs voted against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, the move (कदम, कार्रवाई) places the Dravidian party firmly in the NDA camp and severely restricts any leeway (freedom, latitude, flexibility, scope, room, space, margin, liberty, chance) for it to take an independent line (course of action, approach, position, direction, way) on issues of public interest (सार्वजनिक हित, जनहित). The newly stitched-up alliance (गठबंधन, संघ) could also lead to (परिणामस्वरूप, नेतृत्व करने के लिए) an electoral polarisation (ध्रुवीकरण), narrowing (decrease, reduce, contract, make smaller) the field for fence-sitters (a person who remains neutral or uncommitted in a dispute or decision; someone who avoids taking sides) and marginal players who now have to choose between the fronts (a particular situation; a particular sphere of activity or operation) led by the DMK and the AIADMK to make any impact at all in the first-past-the-post (an electoral system in which a candidate with the most votes in each constituency wins and becomes the Member of Parliament (MP) or Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for that seat) system. Besides (इसके अलावा) the electoral arithmetic (अंकगणित, गणना), the BJP high command (the people with the highest authority in an organization (especially in politics or the armed forces); senior leadership; top management) must have been conscious (aware of; awake to; alert to; mindful of) that time is needed to revive (rejuvenate, reinvigorate, renew, restore, revitalize, re-energize, regenerate, fortify, strengthen) the chemistry (an intense feeling of connection; a relationship, affinity, bond/connection, interaction) between the two parties and to mount (to increase, grow, rise, escalate; to organize, stage, prepare, arrange (a course of action)) a cohesive (united, integrated, cooperated; adhering) campaign (an organized effort that seeks to influence the decision-making process within a specific group; canvassing, electioneering, an act of soliciting (asking for/requesting) votes; a set of organized actions to achieve an ambition) to dislodge (remove, unseat, bring down, topple) the DMK. The BJP might also have been uneasy with the DMK’s growing (increasing) national visibility (clarity, discernibility, prominence, perceptibility, attention), especially after its leader and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the Joint Action Committee (an ad hoc (temporary) committee formed by a coalition of organizations or groups to coordinate and implement collective actions toward a specific objective) for Fair (just, equitable, fair-minded, open-minded, honest, upright) Delimitation with support from parties in seven States. Not surprisingly, Mr. Shah accused the DMK of raising the three-language policy, delimitation (the act of establishing limits or boundaries in a Treaty, Judgement or other Agreement. It literally means the act or process of fixing limits or boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country or a province having a legislative body), and NEET exemption (relief, exception, exclusion, freedom) to divert attention (notice, observation, consideration, heed) from governance (government, administration, regime) failures. But with the AIADMK’s stand (stance, viewpoint, standpoint, position, perspective, approach) on these issues not very different from the DMK’s, how these will be handled in a common minimum programme remains to be seen.

To dispel (to banish, eliminate, or dismiss (something, such as a belief, feeling, or misconception); to drive away) the perception (understanding, thought, belief, opinion, discernment, interpretation) that the BJP is exploiting (take advantage of, make use of, utilize, capitalize on, benefit from) a weakened AIADMK, Mr. Shah affirmed (assert, declare, state, maintain, insist, confirm, vindicate, approve, uphold) that the alliance would fight the elections under Mr. Palaniswami’s leadership. He also avoided pushing for (demand, insist on, ask for; support, advocate, recommend, champion) any patch-up (reconciliation, settlement, resolution, mending, healing, restoration) with splinter (a small fragment broken off from a larger object; a fragment resulting from a break or split; fragment, shard, sliver, piece, segment, offshoot, breakaway, faction, wing) groups of the AIADMK saying such matters were internal affairs (matters, concerns, business, dealings, operations, activities, undertakings). The timing of the alliance announcement overshadowed (conceal, obscure, eclipse, outshine, dwarf, dominate) the transition (change) in the BJP’s State leadership — from K. Annamalai to Nainar Nagenthran — and Mr. Shah ensured that this did not appear as a concession (compromise, adjustment, modification, allowance, rebate, reduction, cut) to the AIADMK, which had strongly opposed Mr. Annamalai. But surely, the elevation of Mr. Nagenthran, a former AIADMK member, could smoothen relations. The NDA is likely to include the PMK and TMC (Moopanar); whether the AIADMK rebels, who joined hands with the BJP in the 2024 general election, will still find a place in the new alliance is unclear. The 2026 election is poised (position, prepare oneself, ready oneself) to be a two-way contest involving the DMK-led alliance and the NDA; the Naam Tamilar Katchi, with an 8% vote share, and actor Vijay’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam will likely bring up the rear (be at the end of the line/queue, be at the very end; come last in a race/contest). With Mr. Shah levelling corruption charges against the DMK, there is also the likelihood (probability, chance, prospect, odds) of central agencies (the central agencies are organizations in the executive branch that co-ordinate the activities of, and provide guidance to the operating ministries and agencies; e.g. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Income Tax Department (IT) and etc) being more active in the State. Although the alliance is sewn up, the NDA could find it challenging to finalise a seat-sharing formula that is acceptable to the many claimants (candidate, applicant).
