Fresh openings: On the J&K Assembly elections
Election in J&K could throw up (उत्पन्न करना) new opportunities for the region
The first Assembly (विधान सभा) election in Jammu and Kashmir after a decade (दशक) has so enthused (प्रोत्साहित करना) people and parties in the Union Territory that expectations are rising that a new era (युग) for the embattled (संकटग्रस्त) territory may be on the horizon (imminent, impending, approaching, coming, on the way, forthcoming, about to happen, in the wings, on the cards, in the pipeline/offing, just around the corner). The erstwhile (पूर्व) J&K lost its statehood (राज्य का दर्जा) and special status under Article 370 in 2019, which naturally remains a central issue for all political actors (सहभागी, भागीदार) as campaigning (चुनाव प्रचार, अभियान) gains momentum (गति, जोर). Regional parties have promised to fight for the restoration (bringing back, reinstitution, reinstallation, re-establishment, revival) of Article 370. The BJP has called them sympathisers (समर्थक) of separatism (अलगाववाद) and vowed (promise, guarantee, pledge, give one’s word, give assurance) that there would be no going back on the question. The Congress is walking a tightrope, avoiding direct references (mention, remark, comment) to Article 370 but promising the restoration of statehood. A record 529 candidates have filed nomination papers for 50 Assembly seats in the first two of the three-phase elections. Besides (इसके अलावा) the mainstream (popular, established, well-known, prominent, famous) regional and national political parties, the Jamaat-e-Islami, a socio-religious organisation classified (consider, describe, term, categorize, call, label, name) as unlawful by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019, has also fielded (nominate, propose, put up (a candidate) to stand in an election) candidates from Assembly segments of north and south Kashmir as independents. It is a major leap (upswing, upturn, elevation, surge, upsurge; a sudden abrupt change or transition) for an organisation that always aligned with separatist (extremist, radical, rebel, insurgent, dissident, nonconformist, sectarian, dissenting, sectarian, renegade, schismatic) outfits and boycotted elections. Even separatists (extremist, radical, rebel, insurgent, dissident, protester, secessionist, nonconformist, sectarian) are trying their luck in electoral politics, and this could potentially (likely, possibly, probably) open (make (something) present, available, or accessible) avenues towards long-standing (enduring, long-lasting, continuing, long-lived, perpetual, perennial, steady, permanent, lasting) peace and stability in the region.
The J&K National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party and Sajad Lone’s J&K Peoples’ Conference, have pledged (promise, guarantee, vow, give one’s word, give assurance) to reverse (cancel, revoke, repeal, quash, overrule, override, invalidate, nullify, abrogate, annul, abolish) many measures (action, step, move, procedure) taken after 2019 and revoke (cancel, reverse, repeal, quash, overrule, override, invalidate, nullify, abrogate, annul, abolish) the Public Safety Act (PSA) (The Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978, of Jammu & Kashmir is an administrative detention law that allows detention of any individual for up to two years without a trial or charge. The Public Safety Act allows for the arrest and detention of people without a warrant, specific charges, and often for an unspecified period of time). The Congress, an ally (partner) of the NC, has expressed concern over “outsiders (non-native, migrant, settler) being allocated land, resources and jobs” and the Lieutenant Governor’s powers. The BJP has managed to expand its voter base (a group of people considered as supporting an organization/party) even in areas away from the plains (a large, flat area of land) of the Jammu region. Its outreach (the level of reaching out/activity/effort; involvement) to Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes attracted prominent Muslim leaders from the Pir Panjal Valley (a low area between hills or mountains typically with a river running through it), especially from the Pahari community, which was granted ST status after years of their agitation ((public) protest). The BJP has already fielded at least 11 Muslim candidates from J&K and its campaign targets the family control over the two regional parties and the Congress. BJP election in-charge (he person who is having control of or responsibility for (something); person in-charge, head, chief) Ram Madhav recently said he hoped to see a new leadership emerging in J&K. At any rate (in any case, anyhow, anyway, nevertheless, regardless, whatever happens) J&K is all set (ready, prepared, organized, equipped) to throw up a new politics on October 8, the date of counting. The Centre and all parties should prepare to seize the new opportunity for the future of a prosperous (prospering, flourishing, burgeoning, thriving, booming, buoyant, successful) State within the Indian Union.
