Good foundation: on India’s strong industrial growth performance
The festive season looks set (तैयार, तत्पर) to build on months of strong industrial growth
India’s industrial growth performance (औद्योगिक विकास प्रदर्शन) in August continued its strong streak (लगातार दौर, निरंतर क्रम) since (from, from the time of, ever since, thereafter) the beginning of the financial year, and sets the economy up well for the upcoming (आगामी, निकट आने वाला) festive season. Growth in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) (औद्योगिक उत्पादन सूचकांक) quickened (तेज होना, गति बढ़ाना) to 8% in August 2026, the second fastest that it has been since at least (कम-से-कम, न्यूनतम) April 2024, which is the earliest month for which the new series of the IIP (the revised series of the Index of Industrial Production introduced by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) with 2022–23 as the base year, incorporating an updated item basket, revised weighting structure, enhanced sectoral coverage, and improved data sources and methodology) has growth data. The fastest growth in this period, of 8.8%, came as recently as (अभी हाल में ही, हाल ही में) June 2026. In fact (वास्तव में), IIP growth in the April-August period of this financial year stood at a robust (मजबूत, दमदार) 6.8%, faster than that seen during (के दौरान, की अवधि में) the corresponding (equivalent, analogous, comparable, matching, parallel) periods of the previous two years. The new series has an updated base year (the specific year used as a benchmark or reference point to compare economic data in subsequent years, typically assigned a value of 100 in index calculations; benchmark year, reference year), more data sources (a location, institution, or system from which statistical information or records are obtained; information origin, reference point, information provider, statistical base), and improved (बेहतर, सुधरा हुआ) methodology, so this growth performance is as accurate (precise, exact, correct, flawless) an indication (sign, signal, pointer, indicator) of industrial growth as government data can provide. Moreover (furthermore, besides, additionally, also), apart from (except for; in addition to; besides, other than, excluding, aside from) a few divergences (variance, deviation, difference, departure), IIP data largely (to a great extent or on the whole; mostly, mainly, primarily, principally) match (to correspond or to be equal to something; equal, correspond to, align with, parallel) the trends (tendency, movement, drift, direction) evident (obvious, clear, apparent, noticeable) in the Index of Core Industries (ICI) (a monthly index compiled and released by the Office of the Economic Adviser (OEA), Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), that measures the individual and combined performance of production in nine core industries—Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Products, Fertilizers, Steel, Cement, Electricity, and Iron Ore—which together account for 32.88% of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP)), the other government index (a statistical measure of changes in a group of data points that are representative of a particular phenomenon; indicator, measure) that measures industrial performance (the efficiency and productivity of the industrial sector in an economy; industrial output, manufacturing efficiency, sector productivity). For example, the IIP shows that the electricity sector’s growth quickened to 12.3% in August 2026, while the ICI pegs (to fix or hold the price, rate, or amount of something at a particular level; fix, set, hold, establish) it at 11.6%. Similarly (likewise, equally, correspondingly, analogously), the construction goods sector saw growth come in (to be received or to result at a certain level; register, arrive, finish, emerge) at a relatively (comparatively, fairly, quite, somewhat) strong 6.4%, albeit (although, even if; although, notwithstanding, despite, yet) slower than July’s 8%. In keeping with (in harmony or conformity with; in accordance with, consistent with, in line with, agreeing with) that, the ICI shows that the cement sector grew by a robust 12.5% in August, though (despite the fact that; although, even though, notwithstanding, whereas) this was slightly (to a small degree; somewhat, a little, minimally, marginally) slower than the 12.7% in July. The older series of both indices often provided contrary (opposite, clashing, conflicting, contradictory) indications, so this alignment (agreement, consistency, conformity, harmony) is welcome (very pleasing because much needed or desired; pleasing, agreeable, gratifying, refreshing).
The IIP for August also lays out (to explain or present something clearly and carefully; explain, detail, outline, present) some core strengths (the most important or fundamental areas of strength; key/main strengths, principal advantages, fundamental strengths; primary pillars, key assets, structural advantages) that seem (to give the impression of; appear, look, sound, present) to be developing in the economy. The manufacturing sector grew by nearly (almost, practically, virtually, approximately) 9% in August, and averaged (amount to, equal, result in, balance out) 7.6% in the April-August 2026 period. Given (taking into account or considering; considering, bearing in mind, keeping in mind, in view of) that it had grown by about (approximately, roughly, nearly, around) 4.2% in the first five months of the previous financial year (a 12-month period for which an organization plans the use of its funds, running from April 1 to March 31 in India; fiscal year), this acceleration (speeding up, quickening, hastening, increase) is good to see (pleasing or satisfying to observe; pleasant to observe, encouraging, heartwarming, pleasing, welcome, heartening, reassuring), especially since it comes at a time (during a specific period or circumstance; during a period, in a phase, at a moment, in an era) when producers are facing (to confront or deal with a difficult situation; confront, encounter, experience, tackle) several input-related (connected with the resources or materials required for production; raw-material-linked, cost-associated, production-resource-based, supply-side) pressures (burden, strain, stress, demand). At the start of this calendar year (a one-year period that begins on January 1 and ends on December 31; standard year), manufacturing growth seemed to have been driven (propel, push, motivate, steer) by a growth in exports. The August data show that this is now being supplemented (augment, add to, complement, enhance) by a recovery (a return to a normal state of health, mind, or economic strength; revival, improvement, upturn, rebound) in domestic consumption (the total amount of goods and services consumed within the borders of a country; local demand, internal consumption). The growth in consumer durables (products directly used by consumers that have a longer durability and can generally be used repeatedly or continuously for a prolonged period; long-lasting consumer goods. Consumer durables such as air conditioners, television sets and passenger cars generally have a longer useful life) stood at 11.1% in August. The consumer non-durables (products directly used by consumers that cannot be preserved for long periods and are generally consumed or used up relatively quickly;short-life consumer goods. Consumer non-durables include products such as milk, rice, sugar, tea and biscuits) sector returned to growth, of a little (to a small extent; slightly, somewhat, faintly, marginally) more than (over, above, in excess of, beyond) 2%, after having contracted (shrink, decline, decrease, diminish) in July. The effect of the Goods and Services Tax (a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India, implemented on July 1, 2017, by subsuming multiple Central and State indirect taxes. Following the 2025 GST rate rationalisation, the earlier four main tax slabs of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% were streamlined into two main rates of 5% and 18%, with a special 40% rate for selected luxury and demerit goods and services, effective September 22, 2025) rate cuts (a reduction in the interest rate or tax percentage by an authority; tax reduction, rate drop, tax slash, rate decrease) in September 2025 should have petered out by now (already, currently, at present, by this time), so this boost (encouragement, uplift, stimulus) in durables production likely (probably, presumably, in all probability, doubtlessly) means (signify, imply, indicate, entail) that producers are expecting a strong festive season ahead. The third quarter (a period of three months, used especially in reference to financial transactions; three-month period, trimester, financial quarter, term) of the financial year will therefore (for that reason, or consequently; consequently, so, as a result, hence) be crucial for the economy, but the groundwork (preliminary work, foundation, or preparation required for future success; foundation, preparation, groundwork, basis) seems to be in place (ready to be used or in the correct situation; established, ready, set up, arranged) for a relatively good one.
