Home and away: On rumours and fake news about migrant workers in TN

Migrant workers must feel safe and as integral part of the community

The rumours (अफवाह) and fake news about migrant (प्रवासी) workers in Tamil Nadu being attacked have seen the quick intervention (हस्तक्षेप) of the authorities (प्राधिकारी), assuring the workers of their safety. Many workers, most from Bihar, have been seen at railway stations waiting to leave for their home State after a video clip of violence between two groups of migrant workers was interpreted (व्याख्या करना) as an attack on migrant workers by locals. In any case (किसी भी स्थिति में), some of the workers were planning to be home for Holi festivities. Even before the problem could snowball (rise, increase, escalate (rapidly)), Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin did well to contact his Bihar counterpart (someone or something that has the same job or purpose as another; equivalent, equal, fellow) Nitish Kumar. There has been quick follow up (investigation, examination or observation) elsewhere too. The Tamil Nadu police filed cases against those spreading rumours, which included the editor of the Dainik Bhaskar, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (भारतीय दंड संहिता). A person has been arrested in Jamui district of Bihar for sharing a misleading (false, inaccurate, deceitful, misguiding, misrepresenting, misreporting) video clip (extract, scene, snippet, cutting). The Bihar police have also found some videos and news reports to be misleading and fake. Officials from Bihar and Jharkhand have visited the migrant hubs of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, and industry representatives (प्रतिनिधि, अधिकारी) are doing their bit to reassure the workers.

The issue has, unfortunately, paved the way for chauvinistic (अंधराष्ट्रीय) politics in Tamil Nadu and Bihar. The role that migrant workers play in different fields of economic activity in Tamil Nadu, particularly real estate, is well known. According to CREDAI Tamil Nadu, the migrant community oversees (निरीक्षण करना) 85% of the work in big projects and 70% in medium-scale projects. It also has a visible (दृश्य, स्पष्ट) presence in manufacturing, textiles, construction, and hospitality. A Tamil Nadu Labour Department survey in 2015 estimated that the State had around 11.5 lakh migrant workers. The episode (turn of events; incident, event, occurrence) has only highlighted (emphasize, underscore, draw attention on, underline) the need for politicians to exercise (practise, use, utilize, employ) caution and restraint (संयम) when commenting (टिप्पणी करना) on issues regarding (के बारे में, के संबंध में) migrant workers. Under the garb (परिधान) of protecting the interests (common concerns (in politics/business)) of local people, many leaders have often denigrated (criticise, attack, insult, devalue, defame) migrant workers or held them responsible for problems such as locals facing unemployment. The message, as Mr. Stalin highlighted in his conversation (discussion, communication) with Mr. Nitish Kumar, that workers “who help in the State’s development (growth, evolution, progress, improvement) are our workers”, should be internalised (accept, agree; embody, incorporate) by all political parties across the spectrum (wide range, gamut, ambit). At the same time, the government, which has been rolling out (start, begin, embark on, usher in (something officially)) welfare (social security, government/state benefit, public assistance) measures (action, step, procedure) for the community, should include the supply of pulses (edible seeds (chickpeas, lentils, beans). (dals)) and edible oil at concessional (having a concession (reduction, cut, discount, deduction)) rates under the Public Distribution System (The Public Distribution System (PDS) in the country facilitates the supply of food grains and distribution of essential commodities to a large number of poor people through a network of Fair Price Shops at a subsidized price on a recurring basis. With a network of more than 400,000 Fair Price Shops (FPS), the Public Distribution System (PDS) in India is perhaps the largest distribution machinery of its type in the world), supplementing (complement, augment, enhance, accompany) what is being given under the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme. An exclusive wing (branch, group (within an organization having specific function)) can be formed to address (tackle, deal with, attend to, try to sort out) the issues and problems migrants face (come across, run into, encounter, experience). The government can also institute a fresh and comprehensive (all-inclusive, extensive, profound, radical, sweeping, all-embracing) study of migrant workers and help in their integration (unification, consolidation, inclusion, merger) with the local community, to make them feel at home (if you feel at home, you feel very comfortable in the place or situation that you are in).
