Israel’s isolation: On the western world and Gaza

Netanyahu must not be allowed to get away with mass murder (सामूहिक हत्या, जनसंहार)

The joint statement by the leaders of Canada, France and the United Kingdom, and announcements by the U.K. and the EU to pause (रुकना, ठहरना) trade talks (बातचीत, वार्ता) with Israel are proof that the Netanyahu government is growing more isolated over its brutal (क्रूर, बेरहम) campaign (अभियान) on Gaza. Since the ceasefire (a negotiated agreement that will be accompanied by other associated commitments to de-escalate the fighting; a temporary stoppage of war, truce, armistice) ended on March 18, over 3,000 residents have been killed in the enclave (area, region (enclosed within)), according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel’s chokehold on aid (सहायता, मदद) and humanitarian (मानवतावादी, दयालु) supplies has pushed thousands to the brink of starvation (भुखमरी, अकाल), a fact that even Donald Trump, President of Israel’s all-time ally (a country/state with an alliance with another one in which they promise to support each other militarily and to defend each other), the U.S., referred to during a trip to West Asia last week. Mr. Trump’s decision to skip Israel was seen as a mark of his displeasure (नाराज़गी, असंतोष) with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policy on the issue. Despite the rebukes (strong disapproval, criticism, censure, castigation, rebuke, reprimand, reproach, reproval, (firm) warning, admonishment), Mr. Netanyahu has said Israeli Defence Forces (इज़रायली रक्षा बल) needed to continue to target Hamas (Hamas is an Islamist militant group based in Gaza) operatives in the area, and added that Israel would now re-take (फिर से लेना) full “military control” of the Gaza (a Palestinian city in the Gaza Strip. Gaza Strip is a self-governing Palestinian territory surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Israel and Egypt) strip, which the IDF had vacated in 2005. The comments provoked (उकसाना, भड़काना) an angry response from the leaders of Canada (Mark Carney), France (Emmanuel Macron), and the U.K. (Keir Starmer), all of whom had pledged (प्रतिज्ञा करना, वादा करना) their support to Israeli actions in response to the October 7, 2023 terror attacks. They called the level of human suffering in Gaza “intolerable (असहनीय, न सहने योग्य)” and Israel’s escalation (intensification, aggravation, exacerbation) of bombardment (bombing, shelling (continuous attack)) a “disproportionate (inordinate, excessive, immoderate, undue, unreasonable, unjustifiable)” response, condemned (criticize, censure, castigate, denounce / decry) the Israeli leadership for threatening to evict (remove, expel, oust, kick out, dislodge, throw out) all Palestinians forcibly from the strip, and recommitted to a “two-state solution (The two-state solution refers to a political deal in which Israel and a Palestinian state exist separately)” for Israel and Palestine, to be discussed at a United Nations conference in June. Significantly, the three countries even threatened sanctions (action taken, or an order given to force a country to obey international laws by limiting or stopping trade with that country, by not allowing economic aid for that country, etc) against Israel. Mr. Netanyahu’s response, to accuse the three leaders of handing (give, hand over to, present to, deliver to) Hamas a “huge prize”, and vowing (affirm, pledge, promise, swear, commit) not to stop “until total victory is achieved”, indicates that he still believes that he can continue without being checked (control, restrain, contain, fight back; stop, halt).

It is time for the international community to speak up (raise one’s voice; express one’s opinions clearly/openly; to support someone or something) so that Mr. Netanyahu does not think he can get away with (to escape blame for; to escape punishment for (something wrong you did); to do something wrong /illegal without being punished or facing consequences) what international agencies are calling genocide (mass murder, massacre, ethnic cleansing, mass slaughter). New Delhi has notably (in particular; particularly, especially) thus far (until now; up to this point in time) not issued any statement. This silence may be because of its own preoccupation (concentration, obsession, fixation, concern, problem) with Pakistan and due to (because of, owing to, on account of, as a result of) Israel’s unequivocal (unambiguous, unmistakable, indisputable, incontrovertible, indubitable, undeniable; clear, crystal clear, well defined, explicit, categorical, outright, certain, decisive, absolute, manifest, distinct) support over Operation Sindoor. There is no link or equivalence (equality, uniformity, sameness, levelness, evenness) between the two situations, however. Too many lives have been lost in the incessant (continuous, non-stop, unceasing, unending, unabating) bombardment by Israel of an area of two million people. Despite the depredations (destruction, devastation, damage), Israel has not, with any clarity, met its objectives (target, intention, purpose, goal/aim) of bringing back the hostages (a person captured or held as security for the fulfilment of certain conditions/terms) or of wiping out Hamas’s presence there yet. Mr. Netanyahu has tried to frame (create, formulate, establish, put together) his government’s actions as a “war of civilisation over barbarism (extreme cruelty or brutality; absence of culture and civilization)”, but it is he who must consider how much this direction-less war that appears to punish the weakest and most defenceless (vulnerable, helpless, powerless, unprotected, undefended, weak) the most resembles (look like, be similar, be like, remind one of, bear semblance to) the latter more than the former, as the numbers of supporters for this war diminish (reduce, lessen, decrease, decline, shrink) worldwide.
