Mission Rajasthan: on the Congress’s internal political troubles
The Congress needs to put its house in order to beat back the Bharatiya Janata Party
Months ahead of the Assembly elections, the ruling (सत्तारूढ़) Congress is facing an internal rebellion (विद्रोह, विरोध) in Rajasthan. Party leader Sachin Pilot has revived (पुनर्जीवित) his campaign (अभियान) to become Chief Minister, replacing Ashok Gehlot. Mr. Gehlot is in no mood to yield (surrender, capitulate, submit, back down, quit, give in/give way; agree to), and party MLAs are largely (मुख्य रूप से) with him. Mr. Pilot was the State party chief during the 2018 election and hoped to be the Chief Minister, when the Congress won. That is not how it turned out, and Mr. Pilot settled (समझौता करना) for the post of Deputy Chief Minister while remaining party chief. In July 2020 he rebelled (बग़ावत करना) openly, demanding the top post for himself. That ended up very badly for him — he lost both posts, while Mr. Gehlot tightened (make stricter, make more rigorous, make more stringent, stiffen, toughen) his grip (पकड़, नियंत्रण) over the party and the government in the process (इस प्रक्रिया में). Last year, Mr. Gehlot emerged (उभरना, प्रकट होना) as the consensus candidate (सर्वसम्मति उम्मीदवार) for the post of Congress president, rekindling (stir up something again; revive, renew, arouse, evoke agaiin (feelings or thoughts about something)) Mr. Pilot’s hopes of succeeding (सफल होना) him in Rajasthan. But Congress MLAs in Rajasthan revolted (विद्रोह करना), this time against the move (step, action, act, measure, tactic) to install (स्थापित करना, नियुक्त करना) Mr. Pilot as the Chief Minister. In the end (finally), Mr. Gehlot stayed on (continue, persist, carry on) as Chief Minister and Mallikarjun Kharge became president of the party. Mr. Pilot is trying his luck again by ratcheting up pressure on the party and Mr. Gehlot.
Mr. Gehlot is a seasoned (अनुभवी) and astute (shrewd, sharp, clever, smart, intelligent) politician with his ear to the ground. He has built a political narrative (a representation of a particular situation; portrayal, account, description, statement) around fresh modes of welfare (social security, government/state benefit, public assistance) and social justice (the equal access to wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society), in the process trying to make himself seemingly (apparently, on the face of it, evidently, supposedly, probably, in all likelihood) irreplaceable (unique, indispensable, incomparable, unparalleled, priceless, invaluable). Mr. Gehlot worked towards enhancing (improve, strengthen, raise) his popularity through compassionate (considerate, sympathetic, kind-hearted, understanding, caring, concerned) management of the pandemic, measures (action, step, procedure) to mitigate (reduce, diminish, lessen) the impact of price rise, and, most recently, with a new law that expands access to health care. Whether all this will yield (give, generate, fetch, provide, bring in) the Congress votes is to be seen. However, changes at the top at the eleventh hour are more likely to damage the prospects (chances, possibilities, expectations, outlook, future) of the party at the hustings (election platform/campaign). The Congress does not need to look further than its most recent disaster in Punjab, in 2021, where it effected a change at the top on the eve of (before a time or (important) event; early) the Assembly election. With the Bharatiya Janata Party not exactly battle ready, the Congress can hope to win a second consecutive (successive, back-to-back, in a row) term in Rajasthan, if only it could put its own house in order. At 45, Mr. Pilot has age on his side, and he could be persuaded (influence, convince, induce, prompt (someone to do something through reasoning/analysis/thinking/justification/rationalization)) to reorient (change the focus on) his ambitions accordingly. Mr. Gehlot should show sagacity (wisdom, insight, understanding, intelligence, sharpness, thoughtfulness), Mr. Pilot patience, and the high command (commander-in-chief, head, leader, boss) leadership, for the Congress to advance (proceed, move forward) in Rajasthan. As the election approaches, the situation might get worse before it gets better. The high stakes ((high-risk) competition, contest, battle, challenge) might prompt (stimulate, encourage, galvanize) one or the other to overplay their hand.
