Raiding party: On Mamata Banerjee’s national ambitions

TMC is encroaching (अतिक्रमण करना, अनधिकार प्रवेश करना, घुस जाना) on the Opposition space at the national level as Mamata eyes a larger role

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s national ambitions are intriguing and daring (साहसी, दुस्साहसी, आत्मविश्वासी). Soon after she led the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to a stellar (शानदार, असाधारण, उल्लेखनीय) victory in the Assembly election earlier this year — third time in a row (consecutively, one after the other, in succession) — she set out (start, start out, embark, set forth; hope, aspire) on an extension scheme, though no coherent (सुसंगत, तार्किक, उचित, तर्कसंगत) strategy (रणनीति, योजना, कूटनीति) is apparent (स्पष्ट, प्रकट, दिखाई देने वाला). There is indeed (वास्तव में, निर्विवाद रूप से) a personal factor — she was savagely (severely, awfully, terribly, dreadfully) targeted by the BJP during the election. She triumphed (विजय प्राप्त करना, जीतना, सफल होना) over the BJP, still struggling to evolve (विकसित करना, प्रगति करना, आगे बढ़ना) a suitable politics for its Bengal foray (a brief & active attempt to get involved in a new activity/sphere), but it appears that the score was not settled. Ms. Banerjee had sensed (समझ, अनुभव, बुद्धि) the emerging confrontation (आमना-सामना, टकराव, लड़ाई) between her politics and the BJP’s early on (at/during an early stage). In January 2019, she assembled leaders of 23 Opposition parties at a public meeting at Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata, where they pledged (प्रतिज्ञा, वचन देना, कसम खाना) to defeat the BJP. Her victory over the BJP was conclusive (निर्णयात्मक, निर्विवाद, असंदिग्ध), but the BJP is waiting in the wings (to be active & ready to do something if (someone) gets an opportunity/chance) to unseat (तोड़ना, उतारना, गिराना) her, having grown to about 70 seats in the Assembly from three in 2016. The Trinamool leader claims she is trying to take the fight to the enemy, her focus right now being Tripura and Goa, where the BJP is in power. There is a large Bengali population in Tripura, and the BJP is unnerved (demoralize, discourage, dishearten, deject, frighten, distress, upset). In both States and beyond, the TMC is recruiting disgruntled (असंतुष्ट, दुखी/निराश) leaders from other parties and free-floaters ((independent) people who are unattached to any of the political parties).

The party is driven by Ms. Banerjee’s charisma (the strength of character, individuality, personality, charm, presence, attractiveness) rather than (instead of) an ideology (a system of belief, set of principles). The TMC has swung both ways — alternating between the BJP and the Congress in the past. The Bengal government run (manage, organize, control) by the party does not shy away from (avoid, recoil, withdraw nervously (due to fear/surprise/pain/dislike)) celebrating the anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of Jana Sangha, as a proud son of Bengal. Though the edge (advantage, upper hand, trump card) of her politics is anti-BJP at the moment for strategic (relating to achieving long-term or overall (military) goals) considerations (factor, issue, point, concern, aspect, facet, feature), it is the Opposition parties, particularly the Congress that is paying for (support, back) her expansion spree (a period of unrestrained/uncontrolled activity). Between 2011 and 2021, the entire rank and file (the ordinary members of a party/organisation/company. It is originally a military term relating to the individual foot-soldiers, excluding the officers) of the Congress shifted to the TMC in West Bengal, and the story is being repeated now in other States. On Wednesday, 12 of the 17 Congress MLAs in Meghalaya joined the TMC. Sushmita Dev and Luizinho Faleiro, defectors (betrayer, turncoat, traitor (a person who changes sides)) from the Congress, are central to the TMC plans in Tripura and Goa, respectively. The induction (recruitment, introduction, admission, admittance) of Ashok Tanwar, a former Congress MP from Haryana, and a Dalit, may signify (mark, signal, indicate) a broader plan for the Hindi States. Dalit politics is at a crossroads in the heartland (the most important part of a field of activity; the central part of something) as the BSP is facing extinction (destruction, elimination, eradication, removal (a complete one)), and there is vacuum (gap, lacuna) to be filled. Ms. Banerjee has been outspoken (forthright, direct, frank, open) on questions regarding federalism, and the Centre’s unilateralism (a method of taking decisions individually without considering others) that undermines (weaken, subvert, sabotage, damage) it. Whether all this is sufficient to catapult (prompt, impel, propel) the TMC as the axis of anti-BJP politics nationally is an open question (unknown/uncertain matter, unsure thing, dubious point, doubtful subject). At the moment, the TMC challenge is less to the BJP and more to the Congress.
