Straws in the wind: On the Bankipur, Datia and Manjalpur by-elections

India’s voters do not seem (प्रतीत होना, लगना) averse to fresh political experiments

The by-elections held on July 30, 2026 in three Assembly (विधानसभा) constituencies across three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled States threw up some surprises, but it may be risky to read (to interpret or understand something in a particular way; interpret, understand, construe, perceive) them as indicators (संकेतक, सूचक) of any definitive (निर्णायक, अंतिम) or enduring (स्थायी, दीर्घकालिक) political trend (प्रवृत्ति, रुझान). Still, Bankipur in Bihar, Datia in Madhya Pradesh and Manjalpur in Gujarat were among (के बीच) the most closely watched electoral contests. Though (यद्यपि, हालांकि) involving only three seats, the results were significant, offering clues about regional political currents (a general tendency or course of events or opinion; trend, tendency, tide, movement), the strength of major parties and the prospects (संभावना, आसार) of emerging (उभरता हुआ, विकसित होता हुआ) political formations (political alliance, coalition, political grouping). These were also the first electoral tests after student protests forced the BJP to remove Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25. The most consequential (महत्वपूर्ण, परिणामकारी) result came from Bankipur. The seat fell vacant after BJP national president Nitin Nabin resigned following (के बाद, के परिणामस्वरूप) his election to the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of India; Council of States, upper house). Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder Prashant Kishor chose the constituency (निर्वाचन क्षेत्र, चुनाव क्षेत्र) for his electoral debut (a person’s first appearance or performance in a particular capacity or role; first appearance, introduction, launch, beginning), turning what would otherwise have been a routine by-election into a high-profile (attracting much attention or publicity; prominent, well-known, famous, widely publicized) political contest. He defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by 19,324 votes, ending decades (दशक, दस वर्ष का काल) of BJP dominance (power and influence; supremacy, superiority, control, hegemony) in the constituency. It marks (indicate, signify, represent, denote) the JSP’s first major electoral success and gives Mr. Kishor political legitimacy (validity, credibility, authenticity, lawfulness) after years as an election strategist (a person skilled in planning action or policy, especially in politics; planner, mastermind, tactician).

In Datia, the Congress secured (to succeed in obtaining or achieving something; obtain, acquire, gain, achieve) an important victory as its candidate (a person who is nominated for election (in this context); nominee, applicant, contender, aspirant), Ghanshyam Singh, defeated BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari by just over 6,000 votes. Unlike Bankipur, Datia witnessed a robust (strong, substantial, healthy, vigorous) voter turnout (the percentage or number of eligible voters who cast their votes in an election; voter participation, voting rate, poll participation, electoral participation) of 71.44%, indicating strong local engagement (involvement, participation, interaction, association) with the contest and suggesting (to put forward for consideration, or to express indirectly; indicate, hint, imply, point to) that the Congress retains (keep, hold on to, maintain, preserve) pockets (a small, isolated group or area within a larger one; enclave, patch, cluster, isolated area) of resilience (the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness, hardiness, flexibility, buoyancy) in Madhya Pradesh despite (in spite of, regardless of, notwithstanding, defying) the BJP’s dominance. The victory does not alter the balance of power (a situation in which political or military strength is divided equitably between two or more groups; equilibrium, parity, equilibrium of forces, distribution of power) in the Assembly, but gives the Congress evidence that local anti-incumbency (a sentiment or vote against the elected officials or party currently in power; anti-establishment sentiment, opposition to the ruling party, anti-government vote, dissatisfaction with the incumbent) and candidate-specific factors can still work in its favour. For the BJP, the defeat serves as a reminder (hint, cue) that its Statewide strength does not automatically translate into (to lead to a particular result or be equivalent to something; convert into, result in, lead to, amount to) victory in every constituency. The third contest, in Manjalpur produced a different outcome (result, consequence, end result, upshot). The BJP retained the constituency, with Satish Govindbhai Patel defeating his rival (competitor, opponent, adversary, contender) by over 30,000 votes. Manjalpur demonstrates the BJP’s ability to hold (to continue to have, keep, or maintain something. In this context, it means to retain or preserve political support or influence; retain, maintain, keep, preserve) its core support base (a group of people who consistently support an organization, cause, or political party; core supporters, loyalists). At the same time (simultaneously or nevertheless; simultaneously, concurrently, together, nevertheless), the outcomes in Bankipur and Datia suggest some volatility (unpredictability, instability, fluctuation, turbulence) among the BJP’s core social base (the primary, dedicated demographic group of people who consistently support a political party; primary voter base, foundational supporters, loyal constituency) of Hindu voters, particularly the upper castes. There is also a larger acceptance (agreement, approval, reception, adoption) among the electorate (all the people in a country or area who are entitled to vote in an election; voters, voting public, constituents, constituency) for fresh political experiments, and that is a trend that connects what happened in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections with Bankipur. If this trend holds (to remain true, valid, or continue to exist over time; continue, remain true, persist, endure), the challenge will be not only for the BJP but also for other legacy parties (an established, long-standing political party that has been in existence for a significant period; traditional party, established party, long-standing party, old-guard party), including and particularly the Congress.
