Testing times: On India’s GDP growth data

GDP data reveal some strengths, but they will come under strain (दबाव, तनाव)

The GDP (सकल घरेलू उत्पाद) growth data released on Friday simultaneously portray (चित्रित करना, प्रस्तुत करना) recent economic strength (आर्थिक मजबूती) and reveal (प्रकट करना, उजागर करना) some reasons for worry (चिंता का कारण). The provisional (प्रारंभिक, अस्थायी) estimates of GDP growth for 2025-26 have been pegged at (निर्धारित करना, तय करना) 7.7%, which is marginally (थोड़ा-सा, मामूली रूप से) higher than the 7.6% predicted (पूर्वानुमान लगाना, भविष्यवाणी करना) by the government in February. This suggests (संकेत देना, इंगित करना) that March, the first full month since the West Asia crisis erupted (भड़क उठना, अचानक शुरू होना), did not see enough of (पर्याप्त मात्रा में, काफी) an impact to affect the full year’s growth. That resilience (लचीलापन) will be dented (diminish, reduce, lessen, decrease) in the months  ahead (the upcoming months, the future, the coming period, the approaching time). The data also showed that several key (crucial, major, important, vital) sectors of the economy, such as (for example, including, like, namely) manufacturing and several services sectors, grew by double digits over and above (in addition to, besides, on top of, along with) a relatively (comparatively, proportionately, somewhat, to a certain degree) high base (foundation, starting point, basis). These are all good signs (indication, signal) for an economy heading into severe supply-related (concerning the provision or availability of goods, related to distribution, supply-chain linked, logistics-based) headwinds (forces or factors that make progress difficult or slow it down; obstacle, barrier, hindrance, impediment) due to (because of, caused by, owing to, on account of) the war in Iran. Notably (particularly, especially, significantly, remarkably), both Private Final Consumption Expenditure (the expenditure incurred on the final consumption of goods and services by resident households and non-profit institutions) and Gross Fixed Capital Formation (a component of the expenditure method of calculating GDP that measures the net increase in fixed capital; it is essentially a net investment)metrics (a standard of measurement; criterion, parameter, scale, gauge) of household consumption (the amount of goods and services consumed by families; domestic expenditure, consumer spending, family spending, private purchasing) and government and private sector investment (capital allocation by state and non-state entities; public and corporate funding, state and business capital injection, combined financial backing) activity, respectively (in the order mentioned, sequentially, individually, correspondingly) — grew faster in 2025-26 than they did in the previous year. The consumption growth is especially welcome (pleasing, agreeable, encouraging, desirable) given (considering, taking into account, bearing in mind, in view of) that it had been at a tepid (unenthusiastic, half-hearted, weak, lukewarm) 5.8% for the previous two years. It remains to be seen how much of the investment growth (the increase in capital allocation, expansion in funding, rise in financial backing, growth in asset formation) was driven (prompt, impel, urge, push) by the private sector. Even if (despite the possibility that, no matter whether, irrespective of the fact that, regardless of whether) this growth was driven by government spending (public expenditure, state spending, federal outlay, national budgeting), it has positive (favourable, beneficial, encouraging, promising) knock-on (secondary, indirect, consequential, cascading) effects on the rest of the economy.

The weakness in the agriculture sector, however (nevertheless, nonetheless, yet, but), is something to worry about (be concerned about, fret about, agonize over, stress over). The sector’s growth slowed to 3% in 2025-26 from 4.2% in 2024-25, despite (in spite of, regardless of, notwithstanding, in the face of) the 2025 monsoon (rainy season, heavy rain, downpour, seasonal precipitation) having concluded at 108% of its long period average (LPA) (historical average of rainfall over a 50-year period; long-term mean, standard precipitation average, baseline rainfall, historical weather norm). This is dire (terrible, dreadful, appalling, grim) news, given that the India Meteorological Department (the principal government agency under the Ministry of Earth Sciences responsible for weather forecasting, meteorological observations, and seismology) has predicted that this year’s monsoon will only be 90% of the LPA. That is not counting (include, take into account, incorporate, factor in) the fertilizer supply constraints (limitations or restrictions in providing agricultural chemicals; agrochemical shortages, fertilizer bottlenecks) that will really be felt in the months ahead. The data also show the rising dominance (supremacy, control, power, authority) of services in the economy, with their share rising to 54.3% of total gross value added (GVA) (an economic productivity metric that measures total output and income in the economy by providing the rupee value for the goods and services produced after deducting the cost of inputs and raw materials) in 2025-26, up from (higher than previously, an increase from, rising from, elevated from) 51.9% in 2022-23. The agriculture sector, which continues to employ (engage, hire, provide work for, take on) the largest share of the population by far (by a great amount, easily, without a doubt, undoubtedly), saw its share in GVA fall (decrease, drop, decline, plunge) to below 20% from 22.1% in 2022-23. The manufacturing sector’s share has remained largely (mostly, mainly, primarily, essentially) unchanged (unaltered, constant, the same, consistent), another cause for concern. This suggests that India is not growing its value-added (denoting the amount by which the value of an article is increased at each stage of its production; enhanced-value, upgraded, processed, improved) manufacturing sector fast enough. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), government, and independent (free from outside control; objective, unbiased, impartial) economists are in agreement (of the same opinion, united, concordant, unanimous) that 2026-27 will see growth slowing significantly. The RBI predicted growth will dip (decrease, fall, drop, decline) to 6.6%, and the Chief Economic Adviser (the economic advisor to the Government of India, responsible for advising on economic policy and preparing the Economic Survey) said that he saw no need to second-guess (question, doubt, criticize with hindsight, re-evaluate) this estimate (rough calculation, approximation, projection, forecast). Last year’s tariff-related (concerning taxes on imports/exports, duty-linked, tax-associated, customs-related) disruptions were a test of India’s export resilience. This year’s energy supply disruptions (interruption in the availability of goods, breakdown in distribution, supply chain shock, logistical blockage) will test the entire economy as well as (and, in addition to, along with, besides) the government’s policy agility (the ability of a government or administration to rapidly adapt, modify, or implement policies in response to sudden economic changes, crises, or new challenges; policy adaptability, administrative nimbleness, regulatory flexibility, strategic responsiveness).
