Tiger by the tail: On the rebellion in the Shiv Sena
The rebellion (विद्रोह, अवज्ञा, प्रतिरोध) in the Sena was in the making for a while, and does not allow for a quick fix (जल्दी ठीक, समाधान) solution
With a majority of the party legislators (विधायक, व्यवस्थापक) joining a rebellion (nonconformist, dissenter, dissident, agitator) led by Eknath Shinde, the Shiv Sena appears to be slipping out of the control of its chief and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the ruling tripartite (त्रिपक्षीय, त्रिभाग) alliance (संधि, गठबंधन) of the Shiv Sena, Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is unravelling (सुलझाना, गिरना, असफल), and it is unclear what will take its place. The Congress and the NCP have pledged (promise, vow, assure, guarantee) the continuation of their support to Mr. Thackeray, who has in turn (के बदले में, क्रमानुसार) expressed his willingness (इच्छा, तत्परता) to step aside in favour of (पक्ष में, के समर्थन में) another leader from the party. The Congress has even offered to provide outside support to the government should it help the Sena put its house in order. Mr. Shinde, until he turned rebel, was a key Sena leader, and has couched (express, formulate, communicate, set forth, put across) his rebellion in ideological (विचारधारा) terms; the Sena has drifted (depart, diverge, deviate, get sidetracked) away from its Hindutva moorings (stabilizing influence/power) by aligning (संरेखण करना) with the NCP and the Congress, according to him. Mr. Thackeray has responded by reiterating (बार बार दुहराना, फिर से कहना) his steadfast (दृढ़, अटल, पक्का) commitment to Hindutva, in an emotional appeal (अपील करना, तत्काल अनुरोध) to party MLAs to stay together. But that seems to have done little to soothe (relieve, alleviate, mitigate, tone down, appease) frayed (strained, stressed, fraught, overtaxed) nerves (anxiety, tension, nervousness, worry) in the party, and more leaders are flocking (go in large numbers) to the rebel tent (camp, faction, group, bloc). The MVA alliance was formed after months of political machinations (schemes, plots, tricks, tactics, plans, intrigues), including the dramatic swearing-in (an official ceremony in which a person is taking the oath and admitted into a new official job) of a short-lived (brief, short, short-term, temporary, transitory) government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a section of the NCP that returned to the party quickly. The BJP is waiting for the opportune (auspicious, propitious, favourable, advantageous, golden, good, right, lucky, fortunate, benign) moment to make its next move (step, action, act, measure, tactic), after using its governments in Gujarat and Assam to abet (help, assist, give assistance to, lend a hand to, be of service to) the revolt (uprising, insurgency, rebellion, seizure of power, regime change, act of resistance, act of defiance).
The Sena severed (break off, cut off, discontinue, suspend, terminate, stop, cease, conclude, bring to an end) its ties (association, relationship, bond, connection) with long-term (long-lasting, long-lived, deep-rooted) partner BJP, even overlooking (neglect, ignore, disregard, turn a blind eye) their ideological bonding (linkage, relationship, association, connection, cohesiveness) of Hindutva to reclaim (recover, get back, retrieve) its eroding (destroying, weakening, deteriorating (gradually)) primacy (greater importance, supremacy, dominance, leadership, priority, preference, first place) in State politics. Despite the ideological mismatch (discrepancy, inconsistency, contradiction) among the allies, the MVA partners had compulsions to stay united — until the resentment (bitterness, indignation, displeasure, dissatisfaction, disgruntlement, discontentment, discontent, resentfulness, hard feelings) within the Sena snowballed (rise, increase, escalate (rapidly)) to challenge (question, disagree with, object to, take exception to, confront, dispute, take issue with, protest against) the authority (power, command, control, dominance) of the Thackeray family. This crisis has been in the making for a long time, and the CM’s blind trust ((immoderate/excessive/unchecked) confidence, faith, certitude) in the loyalty (allegiance, faithfulness, fidelity, obedience, adherence, devotion, bond) of his warriors (champion, defender, supporter, confederate; guardsman, fighter) has turned out (transpire, prove to be the case, emerge, happen, occur, come about) to be misplaced (misguided, misconceived, ill-advised, ill-considered, ill-judged). To be fair (used for making your criticism less forceful), these MLAs had been complaining about lack (absence, deficiency, unavailability, non-existence) of access to the Chief Minister and his son and Minister Aaditya Thackeray. The junior Thackeray’s attempts to reshape (change, alter, transform, remodel) the party as more palatable (pleasant, acceptable, satisfactory, agreeable) to the upper-class sensibilities (feelings, emotions, finer feelings) disturbed the rustic (rural, countryside; agricultural, agrarian, naive, ingenuous), often restive (restless, agitated; disobedient, defiant, uncontrollable, unmanageable) party base (a group of people considered as supporting an organization/party) that used to be kept on a constant boil by his grandfather and party founder Bal Thackeray. Mr. Shinde is one of the very few mass leaders in Sena, after the Thackerays. He is perceived to be accessible (approachable, easy-going, friendly, welcoming), and holds sway (hold power, have the greatest influence, have the upper hand) in two districts neighbouring (adjacent, bordering, abutting, surrounding; nearby) Mumbai, almost six municipal corporations and an equal number of smaller local bodies. He felt sidelined (remove (from the centre of attention)) in the new scheme of things, and was waiting for the right opportunity to strike. The Sena is at a crossroads (at a situation when an important decision ought to be made) and could even head to a dead end (a situation with no progress; a situation with no future; full stop; impasse, deadlock, stalemate, standstill).
