United and free: on the Prime Minister’s Independence Day speech
India needs unity (एकता, एकजुटता), not uniformity; (एकरूपता, समानरूपता) dissent (असहमति, विरोध) must not be seen as divisive
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech (भाषण, वक्तव्य), his thirteenth, was delivered (to give a speech, lecture, or formal address to an audience; present, give, voice, pronounce) within an entirely new political context (संदर्भ, परिस्थिति), shaped (प्रभावित करना, स्वरूप देना) by the recent student protests that led to the resignation of his Education Minister. The protests may have waned (कम होना, घट जाना), but their underlying (अंतर्निहित, मूलभूत) and lingering (lasting for a long time or slow to end; persistent, enduring, prolonged, surviving) reasons for the unrest (अशांति, असंतोष) remain a matter of serious concern (गंभीर चिंता का विषय) for the country. Mr. Modi sought to offer hope, inspiration and purpose (उद्देश्य, प्रयोजन) on the one hand (used to introduce one of two contrasting points of view or facts; from one viewpoint, from one standpoint, in one sense, for one thing) while, on the other (used to introduce a contrasting or opposing point to the one previously mentioned; in contrast, on the other hand, from another perspective), built a new phantom (something imagined or perceived to exist but which may not actually exist; illusion, figment, spectre, apparition, ghost, imagined thing) labelled (describe, classify, characterise, designate) ‘dimagi naxals (a term used for an alleged or perceived form of ideological influence or disruptive thinking associated with “Naxal” ideas, presented as a political label or construct; ideological influence, radical mindset, perceived ideological threat)’, who, he said, influenced (to have an effect on someone or something; affect, impact, guide, sway) policymaking (the act of creating laws or setting standards for a government or business; governance, legislation, administration, decision-making) and required purging (to remove a group of people considered undesirable from a place; eradicate, eliminate, remove, expel). The speech was specifically (precisely, explicitly, accurately, expressly) addressed (speak to, talk to, give a speech to, lecture) to the young citizens of the nation. Mr. Modi repeatedly (over and over again; constantly, continuously, frequently, continually) stressed (emphasize, underline, highlight, underscore) the need for big dreams, firm (resolute, determined, unwavering, steadfast) resolve (determination, resolution, purpose, steadfastness) and rapid execution (the carrying out or putting into effect of a plan, order, or course of action; implementation, accomplishment, completion, enforcement), arguing that India could no longer (not anymore, nevermore, no more, previously) think in incremental terms (by making small, gradual changes or progress rather than through large or sudden changes; gradually, step by step, little by little). He promised skill training for one crore youth over the next year to prepare India for the artificial intelligence (the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems; machine learning) era; (age, period, epoch, time) free online coaching for competitive examinations to reduce the burden (a heavy load or a difficult responsibility to carry; responsibility, pressure, strain, load) on families and improve access to opportunities; and renewed (revive, restore, reinvigorate, re-establish) the government’s emphasis (special importance, value, or prominence given to something; stress, significance, weight, priority) on innovation, quantum technology (technology based on the principles of quantum mechanics, using properties such as superposition and entanglement to enable advanced capabilities in computing, communication, sensing and related fields), space, robotics, data centres and other emerging (developing, rising, upcoming, growing) sectors. Mr. Modi reiterated (to say something again or a number of times, typically for emphasis or clarity; repeat, restate, retell, iterate) his commitment (dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty) to self-reliance (reliance on one’s own powers and resources rather than those of others; independence, autonomy, self-sufficiency, self-dependence) in defence production, including advanced (modern and recently developed; progressive, cutting-edge, state-of-the-art, sophisticated) technologies such as (for example or of a kind that; for instance, specifically, like, namely) drones (unmanned aerial vehicles guided by remote control or onboard computers; unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs, pilotless aircraft, remote-controlled planes) and next-generation (future, modern, advanced, ultra-modern) defence systems. All Indians would naturally (inevitably, logically, rightfully, inherently) appreciate (to recognize the full worth of something; value, acknowledge, recognize, respect) these promises (pledges, vows, guarantees, commitments) and the statement of purpose (a formal declaration of one’s goals, intentions, or objectives; declaration of intent, manifesto, mission statement, objective declaration).
Whether (if, in case, supposing, provided) Mr. Modi wanted, or tried, to build (develop, create, establish, construct) a unified national approach towards these challenges (difficulties, hurdles, obstacles, problems) and their management (handling, administration, direction, regulation) is doubtful (questionable, uncertain, unconfirmed, unresolved). India’s progress is a continuum (sequence, progression, continuity, range) that should ideally have a compounding (accumulating, intensifying, escalating, augmenting) effect with each subsequent (following, succeeding, ensuing, later) year. Comparing, in absolute terms (measured by itself, not in comparison with other things; fundamentally, strictly speaking, unconditionally, literally), achievements before and after 2014, when he became Prime Minister, is neither statistically relevant (pertinent, applicable, germane, related) nor politically prudent (wise, sensible, cautious, judicious). The fact about India as it enters the 80th year as a free nation (independent country, sovereign state, autonomous nation, self-governing republic) that fought off colonialism (the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically; imperialism, expansionism, domination, subjugation) is that its challenges are unprecedented (never done or known before; unparalleled, unequaled, unmatched, novel). It has a massive (huge, enormous, immense, colossal) young population entering the workforce (employees, personnel, staff, workers) even as (while, at the same time as, just as, during) technology is disrupting life and work as never before (in a way or to a degree not seen previously; unprecedentedly, distinctively, exceptionally, uniquely). What India needs is an all-hands-on-the-deck (involving everyone available to help with a problem or task; collective, unified, collaborative, all-inclusive) approach, requiring a unified political will (the firm intention or commitment on the part of a government to carry out a policy; political determination, governmental resolve, state commitment, administrative drive) among (surrounded by; in the company of; between, amid, amidst, amongst) parties and stakeholders (people with an interest or concern in something, especially a business or policy; investors, participants, associates, contributors) that is unaffected (unchanged, unaltered, impervious, untouched) by electoral contests. India also needs an indigenous (native, aboriginal, local, domestic) understanding (comprehension, awareness, perception, grasp) and philosophy (ideology, principles, values, doctrine) of development (growth, evolution, progress, advancement) rather than (instead of, in place of, as opposed to, more than) trying to mimic (imitate, copy, simulate, mirror) the techno-capitalism (a form of capitalism in which technology heavily dictates economic growth and the accumulation of wealth; digital capitalism, tech-driven economy) that is rattling (to make someone nervous, worried, or irritated; unnerve, disturb, perturb, unsettle) advanced economies (a wealthy nation featuring high per-capita income, deep global financial integration, and a dominant service sector; developed country, high-income economy, or industrialized nation). This is a point (issue, fact) that was underlined by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat in his Independence Day speech. Mr. Modi clearly sees the challenges; but he also sees, unfortunately, an enemy in every critic (a person who expresses an unfavorable opinion of something; detractor, censurer, attacker, fault-finder). As he leads the country into a new year of independence, perhaps (maybe, possibly, conceivably, arguably) he could consider new ideas, including those from his critics, instead of (as an alternative to; in place of, rather than, in lieu of, as a substitute for) amplifying (to make something more marked or intense; increase, magnify, intensify, boost) divisive ones.
