Welcome move: On the Supreme Court and Gen Z protesters
The relief (राहत, कानूनी राहत) granted (प्रदान करना, मंजूर करना) to the Gen Z (the generation of people born in the late 1990s and early 2010s; Generation Z, young generation, post-millennials) protesters must not stop with them
In what should be termed (कहलाना, नाम देना) a salutary (लाभकारी, हितकारी) gesture (कदम, कार्य), the Supreme Court of India, at the request of the Union government, invoked (cite or appeal to a law, rule, or authority as a reason for an action; cite, refer to, adduce, resort to) its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution (संविधान) to quash (रद्द करना, निरस्त करना) criminal cases against the youth who had taken part (भाग लेना, शामिल होना) in nationwide (राष्ट्रव्यापी, देशभर में फैला हुआ) protests seeking (attempt or desire to obtain or achieve something; try, attempt, strive, endeavour) examination reforms (सुधार, सुधारात्मक बदलाव) and government accountability (जवाबदेही, उत्तरदायित्व). Led by a group, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) (a youth-led protest group formed in India in response to controversial remarks regarding unemployment made by the Chief Justice of India, associated with demands for government accountability and (examination) reforms), in response to (के जवाब में, की प्रतिक्रिया में) Chief Justice of India’s “unemployment” and “cockroaches” remark (टिप्पणी, बयान) — these protests swelled (to become larger in amount, volume, or number; increase, grow, expand, multiply) in numbers and reach (the extent or range of influence, or effect; range, scope, extent, sweep), forcing the then Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, to resign. Among (included within, included in, part of, one of, out of) the demands for halting (bring or come to an abrupt stop; stop, cease, terminate, suspend) the agitations (protest, campaign, demonstration, unrest) was the CJP’s call (demand, appeal, request, plea) to withdraw (to take back or remove something (like a legal charge); remove, cancel, retract, revoke) the FIRs against protesters in Delhi and other States/Union Territories, which the Court has granted, while directing (order, instruct, command, mandate) the Centre to ensure that no fresh FIRs are registered over (concerning, about, or relating to a particular subject; regarding, concerning, on, about) the protests in July. That the Centre asked for this step by the Court shows how the CJP’s agitations resonated (to evoke a feeling of shared emotion or belief; connect, echo, reverberate, align) with the youth of the country, who agreed with the movement’s (a group of people working together to advance their shared political, social, or artistic ideas; campaign, crusade, drive, push) core (the most important or central part of something; primary, central, main, essential) demands (request, requirement). It is also an acknowledgment (admission, acceptance, concession, recognition) by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government that this is a pressing (urgent, critical, crucial, acute) issue (an important topic or problem for debate or discussion; matter, subject, topic, problem) that revealed (disclose, display, expose, uncover) its failings (fault, shortcoming, flaw, defect), particularly (especially, exceptionally, specifically, notably) the series (a number of events coming one after another; succession, sequence, chain, string) of paper leaks (the unauthorized release or disclosure of examination question papers before the scheduled time) across (throughout, all over, around, spanning) India over the years (during a period of many years; continuously, persistently, chronically, historically), compounded (aggravate, worsen, exacerbate, intensify) by an employment deficit (shortfall, deficiency, shortage, lack) for youth.
The Centre’s stand (position, stance, viewpoint, perspective) in the CJP matter (subject, issue, affair) is in stark contrast to (completely different from something else; contrary to, completely opposite to, at variance with, opposed to) how it has dealt with dissent (disagreement, opposition, objection, protest) on other issues that have driven (to compel or urge to action; force, prompt, impel, push) thousands to protest in recent years. The most prominent (important or famous; notable, significant, well-known, conspicuous) among these were the farmer-led protests in and around (in a particular place and the surrounding areas; near, close to, surrounding, bordering) Delhi, and the agitations against the communally (in a way that relates to the different communities or religious groups within a society; sectarianly, divisionally, parochially, factionally) motivated (driven or caused by a particular motive or reason; prompted, driven, induced, provoked) Citizenship (Amendment) Act (an Act passed by the Parliament of India in 2019 amending the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide a fast-track pathway to Indian citizenship for persecuted religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India before December 31, 2014). Both were largely (to a great extent or on the whole; mostly, mainly, primarily, predominantly) peaceful, but this did not prevent the government from foisting (impose an unwelcome or unnecessary person or thing on; impose, force, thrust, inflict) serious charges (accusation, allegation, indictment, complaint) including those related to (connected with something; associated with, connected to, linked to, concerning) terrorism and sedition (conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch; incitement, rebellion, subversion, insurrection), on peaceful protesters, many of whom remain (stay, endure, persist, continue) in jail without trial (court case, hearing, inquiry, tribunal) or bail (the temporary release of an accused person awaiting trial, sometimes on condition that a sum of money be lodged to guarantee their appearance in court; release, surety, security, bond). Legitimate (conforming to the law or to rules; lawful, legal, valid, authorized) protest has long (for a long time; persistently, enduringly, continually, consistently) been a means (method, way, process, medium) of defusing (to make a situation less tense or dangerous; ease, calm, mitigate, alleviate) pent-up (closely confined or held back (especially of emotions); repressed, suppressed, stifled, bottled-up) discontent (dissatisfaction, unhappiness, displeasure, resentment) with government policies in India. The Centre has instead (as an alternative or substitute; alternatively, rather, as a substitute, on the contrary) sought to criminalise (to turn an activity into a criminal offence by making it illegal; penalise, outlaw, prohibit, ban) it, branding (to describe someone or something as having a particular bad quality; label, stigmatise, categorize, classify) dissent and disaffection (alienation, discontent, estrangement, hostility) as sedition to create a chilling effect (a discouraging or deterring effect, especially on the exercise of a right like freedom of speech; deterrence, discouragement, suppression, dampening). The CJP managed to overcome (succeed in dealing with a problem or difficulty; defeat, conquer, beat, surmount) that ploy (a cunning plan or action designed to turn a situation to one’s own advantage; tactic, scheme, trick, stratagem) not only through the justness (fairness, righteousness, equity, justice) of its demands but also because the protesters’ identities (characteristics, attributes, selfhood, persona) as youth and students transcended (be or go beyond the range or limits of something; surpass, exceed, go beyond, overstep) the limited (restricted, narrow, confined, bounded) categories of religion, caste and even class (a system of ordering society whereby people are divided into sets based on perceived social or economic status; social group, stratum, rank, level) (“richer farmers”) that the BJP sought to use to sow (cause to appear or spread (typically something causing negative reactions); plant, spread, disseminate, propagate) discord (disagreement between people; conflict, friction, hostility, disharmony) and delegitimise (withdraw legitimate status or authority from someone or something; invalidate, discredit, undermine, nullify) them. Even if (despite the possibility that; whether or not, regardless of whether, notwithstanding that, although) it is too much (an intolerable, impossible, or exhausting situation or demand; excessive, unreasonable, unendurable, disproportionate) to expect the Centre to seek similar relief for those held in earlier cases, the Court would do well to apply (bring a rule or principle into operation or use; implement, execute, administer, enforce) to them the standard it has now set for (to establish a level or standard for someone or something; establish for, create for, institute for, formulate for) the CJP. Until (up to the point in time or the event mentioned; till, up to, prior to, before) it does, the relief granted to the CJP and its sympathisers (supporter, well-wisher, ally, backer) will remain an exception (anomaly, irregularity, deviation, special case) rather than (instead of, as opposed to, in place of, alternatively) a principle (rule, standard, code).
