CUET UG 2025: Fully Online Exam, Subject Flexibility Announced by UGC Chief

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced significant updates to the CUET-UG 2025 exam, making it a fully computer-based test (CBT). This change replaces the earlier hybrid mode to improve accuracy, speed, and security in the examination process. Students can now choose test subjects even if they haven’t studied them in Class 12, allowing more flexibility in higher education.

The number of subjects has been reduced from 63 to 37. For the dropped subjects, admissions will be based on General Aptitude Test (GAT) scores. The test duration has been standardized at 60 minutes for all papers. The number of questions will be the same across all subjects, and optional questions have been removed, making all questions mandatory.

Language options have also been streamlined, reducing the number of available languages from 33 to 13. Some of the languages still included are Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Similarly, domain-specific subjects have been reduced from 29 to 23, with Entrepreneurship, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies, and Engineering Graphics among the dropped options.

Switching to CBT ensures quicker result processing, reduces human errors, and improves exam security. UGC Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar said the changes will create a level playing field for students by testing everyone on the same set of questions. This will also encourage students to prepare more thoroughly across all topics.

CUET-UG remains the single platform for undergraduate admissions to 46 central universities, including Delhi University, BHU, and Allahabad University. Past issues, such as result delays caused by technical glitches and logistical challenges, have been addressed to ensure smoother operations in 2025.

With these updates, CUET-UG 2025 aims to provide a fairer, more efficient, and student-friendly exam experience, simplifying admissions to higher education institutions across India.
