Delhi University has made a significant announcement regarding admissions for undergraduate courses. If seats remain vacant after admissions based on CUET scores, DU will admit students based on their 12th-grade marks. His statement came after the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced on Thursday that universities can conduct their entrance exams or admit students based on qualifying exam scores if seats remain vacant after CUET-based admissions.

Response from Delhi University
Responding to UGC's directive, Yogesh Singh said, "We welcome the UGC's directive. We also believe that no seats should remain vacant in any course. We will use 12th-grade marks to fill vacant seats in UG programs."

UGC Chairman's Statement
UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar stated on Thursday that keeping seats vacant throughout the academic year is not only a waste of resources but also deprives many students of quality higher education in central universities. However, the UGC has clarified that CUET scores will remain the primary criterion for student admissions.

Flexibility in Admission Criteria
The commission also recommended that universities consider admitting students who did not appear for domain-specific papers in CUET. "The university can relax domain-specific criteria for admission to a particular course," it stated.

Previous Year's Scenario
Last year, around 5,000 seats remained vacant at DU. The university employed various methods to fill all seats. According to the SOP issued by the UGC, universities can conduct entrance exams for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses if seats remain vacant after regular admission rounds. When asked about conducting entrance exams to fill vacant seats, Singh said, "We will not conduct entrance exams, but we will ensure that all seats in the university are filled."

The admission process for the academic year 2024-25 is underway at DU. Delhi University is offering more than 71,000 seats across 65+ colleges through the Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduates (CUET UG).
