The Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET UG), which has been conducted online for the past two years, is set to adopt a hybrid mode for the upcoming exam. This change aims to provide convenience for candidates, especially those in rural areas, by allowing them to take the test closer to their homes.
The National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting the exam on behalf of the UGC, is expected to commence registration around February 19. The third edition of the exam is scheduled to take place from May 15 to 31, featuring significant modifications in format, subjects, and difficulty level, as per senior officials from NTA and UGC.
UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar revealed that for subjects with higher registration, the test will shift from Computer Based Test (CBT) to Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets in a multiple-choice question format. This change enables the examination to be conducted in a single day and shift for all candidates nationwide, utilizing various schools, colleges, and educational institutions as exam halls, similar to other exams like NEET. This adjustment is particularly beneficial for students in rural areas, eliminating the need for extensive travel.
Last year, approximately 28 lakh candidates participated in CUET UG, with Uttar Pradesh contributing the highest number of applications. The hybrid format will feature three shifts each day (9 am to 11 am, 12.30 pm to 2 pm, and 4 pm to 5.30 pm), reducing the overall number of exam days. UGC Chairman Kumar mentioned that this format may also impact the normalization process for result calculation, depending on the evolving situation.
To streamline the process, the number of subjects a candidate can choose will be reduced from 10 to six. NTA data indicated that most students did not opt for all 10 subjects, causing complexities in exam center allocation. In CUET UG 2024, students will be permitted to select only six test papers, encompassing three domain subjects, two languages, and the general test.
Additionally, NTA is committed to maintaining a moderate difficulty level for CUET UG 2024 to alleviate stress among students, as mentioned by Chairman Kumar.
