CUET Update : UGC Chief Hints at Stopping Normalization of Marks for CUET UG, Changes in Exam Being Made by NTA

Normalization of marks for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG is likely to end from this year, as the National Testing Agency (NTA) is planning important exam changes for its third edition, according to top officials.

The examination, which lasts for a month, is likely to be conducted in a shorter duration as the agency is considering a hybrid mode, involving OMR sheets and computer-based examination. This move will also ensure that most of the students will get a chance to take the exam in the city of their choice.

"NTA is working on the possibility of conducting the paper in OMR mode with larger registrations. This will help us choose a larger number of schools as examination centres. This will ensure that students can take the exam within their town or city. A center will be found and there is no need to travel to distant places, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar told PTI.

“The adoption of pen-and-paper mode for subjects with larger registrations and computer-based testing for papers with smaller registrations will ensure that CUET-UG can be conducted in a shorter duration unlike the last two years. The hybrid mode promotes equal opportunities for all, ensuring that geographical barriers do not hinder the educational aspirations of students in rural and remote areas,” Kumar said.

He said that examining a single subject on a single day would eliminate the need for normalization of marks.

“For the last two years, in our effort to provide the center of first choice to students as much as possible we had to conduct exams over two or three days for the same paper. But this year, by adopting OMR mode, a large number of centers will be available in schools and colleges, thereby enabling us to conduct the examination across the country in a single day. If the examination for the same paper is conducted over multiple days, normalization is required and this is a scientific method,” the UGC chairman said.
