    The number of white tiles 
    W = 2x + 2(y – 2) = 2 (x + y – 2)

    Given that the number of white tiles is the same as the number of red tiles 
    ⇒ 2 (x + y – 2) = xy – 2 (x + y – 2) 
    ⇒ 4 (x + y – 2) = xy 
    ⇒ xy – 4x – 4y = –8 
    ⇒ (x – 4) (y – 4) = 8 = 8 ×1 or 4 × 2 
    ⇒ m – 4 = 8 or 4 
    ⇒m = 12 or 8 
    Therefore, the number of tiles along one edge of the floor can be 12
