Fill in the blank [3] with the correct passive voice from the given options:
    Solution

An action in a sentence can be represented in two ways, namely active and passive voice.

The passive voice always uses the past participle form of the main verb irrespective of any tense. Only the auxiliary verbs depend upon the sentence given in active voice.

The correct answer is C) It is sieved as the sentence is in the present tense and the main verb is used in the third form.

Options A, B, and D are not correct as the sentence is not in the present continuous tense, past tense and helping verb is missing respectively.

When milk starts boiling, it is sieved into the cup.

Thousands of kites ___ at the International Kite festival.
  • Question 3
    1 / -0
From the options below, identify the sentence which is in the passive voice:
    Solution
A sentence is in active or passive voice depending on whether its verb is in active or passive voice. A verb is in active voice when its form shows that the subject does something/ some action. A verb is in passive voice when something is done to the subject. In passive voice, the doer of the action may appear in the phrase, "by .....". This could be one easy way of identifying a sentence in passive voice. However, in some cases, this phrase is omitted.

In option A, The subject is "building" and the action word performed on the subject is "was inaugurated". Note that the phrase, "by the Chief Minister" is used, indicating that "the Chief Minister is the doer of the action. Hence, this sentence is in the passive voice. Option A is correct.
In option B, the subject is "The Chief Minister". The action performed by the subject is "inaugurated". This sentence is in the active voice. Option B is incorrect.
In option C, The subject is "The Chief Minister" and the action performed by the subject is "did not inaugurate". This sentence is in the active voice. Option C is incorrect.
In option D,  The subject is "building". The action performed by the subject is "is", which is the present tense form of the verb beHence this sentence is in the active voice. Option D is incorrect.

  • Question 4
    1 / -0
From the options below, identify the sentence(s) which is/are in the passive voice:
    Solution
A sentence is in active or passive voice depending on whether its verb is in active or passive voice. A verb is in active voice when its form shows that the subject does something or some action. A verb is in passive voice when something is done to the subject.
In option A, the subject is "He" and the subject performs the action, "made". This is in the active voice and option A is incorrect.
In option B, the subject is "The servant". The subject performs the action verb "did". Thus, it is in the active voice and option B is incorrect.
In option C, the subject is "The servant" and the action, "was made" is performed on the subject. This is in the passive voice and option C is correct.
In option D,  the subject is "The servant", who performs the action verb "did". Hence this sentence is in the active voice and option D is incorrect.
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Choose the correct passive form from the options given below:
A cardigan ___ by the old lady at that time. [Intermediate]
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
Choose the most suitable passive voice conversion of the given sentence:
A bus knocked down a cow on the road.
    Solution
The passive voice is used when we want to focus attention on the person or thing affected by the action. We make the person or thing the subject of the sentence, here, the cow and use the passive voice. The preposition "by" is used to indicate agent, the bus. Hence, Option D is correct. The rest of the options do not follow the required structure, hence incorrect.
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Change the direct narration into indirect narration:
The teacher said to the students, "You must study hard for the test on comprehension."
    Solution

The two ways of relating what a person has said are 1)direct and 2)indirect (reported speech). In direct speech, the original speaker's exact words are repeated. In indirect/reported speech, the exact meaning is expressed but not necessarily using the original speaker's exact words. Pronouns and possessive adjectives usually change from first or second person to the third person except when the speaker is reporting his own words. Sometimes a noun can be inserted to avoid doubt.

When we turn direct questions and exclamations into indirect speech, they are converted to affirmative statement .( ? and ! is not used).

Option A is correct as you is changed to they and that is added.

The other options are wrong as had, could , and are going can't be used.

The correct answer is A)The teacher told the students that they must study hard for the test on comprehension.

  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Choose the correct indirect speech form of the given statement.
The Giant Panda said, "Hurrah$$!$$ I have become the strongest warrior." [Advanced]
    Solution
Since the word 'hurrah' is used, we must use a similar word which can convey the same tone of excitement in the indirect speech. The sentence which is in the present perfect tense should be converted to past perfect tense. According to these, option A is the correct answer.
Option B is incorrect because it has omitted certain parts of the direct speech in conversion.
Option C is incorrect because the sentence is in the present perfect tense and not in the past perfect tense as is required.
Option D is incorrect simply because we have chosen one specific option as the correct answer.
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Choose the most suitable passive voice conversions of the given sentence :
The news of ceasefire pleased the soldiers.
    Solution
A sentence is in active voice when the subject is the doer of the action.
A sentence is in passive voice when the new subject (object in active voice) is the receiver of that action.
The object in the active voice now takes the place of the subject, and vice versa. (subject + verb + object, where the subject and object swap places)
The structure of the given sentence is: Subject (The news of ceasefire) + verb (pleased) + object (the soldiers).
When this is changed to passive voice, the correct structure must be:
New subject (the soldiers) + verb (were pleased) + by + new object (the news of ceasefire).
The preposition 'by' is essential in passive voice, so that the meaning of the sentence does not change, the original subject 'the news of ceasefire' still performs the action. Also, 'pleased' is changed to 'were pleased', as the voice changes.
Option B: The structure mentioned above can be seen in B, hence it's the correct option.
Option A is incorrect because the subject has been altered from a phrase 'the news of ceasefire' to a word 'ceasefire'.
Option C is incorrect as the preposition 'by' is missing. The sentence is hence, incomplete in meaning.
Option D is incorrect as the correct answer only lies in B.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Convert the given sentence into passive voice:
'Please lend me your Grammar book for a day.'
    Solution
The use of "please" indicates request. Since the request is made to the person being addressed, "you" should be used. Hence, Option B is correct. The rest of the options are not in the required passive voice structure, hence they're incorrect.
