South Pacific island nation Samoa, positioned to the East of the International Date Line, on May 2011 decided to forego a day and shift to the time zone on its West. The reason for this shifting is to ________.
    Solution
Samoa decided to shift to the west of the International Date Line in order to come in the same time zone as Australia, New Zealand and Eastern Asia which would have facilitated trade with these nations and thus would have been in the economic interests of Samoa.

  • Question 5

Which of the following statements is the reason for 'Seasons' on the surface of the Earth?
    Solution
The earth has an axial tilt of 23.5 degrees which means that its rotation axis is inclined to its orbital axis at an angle of 23.5 degrees. This causes one pole of the earth to be directed more towards the Sun on one side of the orbit, and the other pole on the other side. This is the reason for occurrence of 'seasons' on earth.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
When there is noon at IST meridian, people in another place of the Earth are taking their 6 O' clock morning tea. The longitude of the place is ______.
    Solution
If the time of the concerned place is 6 hours behind Indian Standard Time (IST), which itself is 5.5 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), it means that it is located to the west of Prime Meridian, i.e. 0 degrees meridian. A difference of 15 degrees in longitude represents 1 hour of difference. This means that the given location is located 7.5 (15 divided by 2) degrees west of the Prime Meridian, i.e 7 degrees and 30 minutes W.
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
What is the relationship between solar day and sidereal day?
    Solution
Solar day is time taken for the Sun to appear on the same meridian in the sky. Sidereal day refers to time taken for a distant star to appear in the same meridian in the sky, which is in fact equal to time taken for the earth to rotate around its own axis as the angular speed is measured by taking distant stars as references.

Earth moves a little less than a degree around the Sun during the time it takes for 1 full axial rotation. So, for the Sun to appear on the same meridian in the sky again after 1 full axial rotation, the Earth has to rotate one extra degree to bring the Sun in to the same apparent meridian in the sky. This is why the solar day is longer than the sidereal day by about 4 minutes.
  • Question 8

Which one of the following is the correct sequence of the given planets in increasing order of their size (diameter)?
    Solution
The correct sequence of the planets in increasing order of their sizes is as follows: Mercury < Mars < Venus < Earth < Neptune < Uranus < Saturn < Jupiter
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
If the time of a place located on $${165}^{o}E$$ meridian is 11:00 pm on Sunday, what would be the time at the place located on $${165}^{o}W$$ meridian?
    Solution
A difference of 15 degrees in longitude accounts for 1 hour of time difference. In this case, total difference in longitude is 330 degrees which means that total time difference between the two places would be 330/15 which is equal to 22 hours. Thus the time at the place at 165 degrees West would be 1 AM (Sunday).
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
    Consider the following statements:
    (1) When the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are aligned in a straight line, the position is referred to as SYZYGY.
    (2) When the Sun and Moon are in straight line, it results in Spring Tide.
    (3) When the Sun and Moon are in right angle, it results in Neap Tide.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
    Solution
SYZYGY, in astronomy, basically refers to a particular situation when three celestial bodies come in a straight line in a gravitational system. The word is often used in reference to the Sun, the Moon and the Earth coming in straight line.

Spring tides occur on full moon and new moon when the Sun, the Moon and the Earth are in straight line. Neap tides, on the other hand, occur when the Sun and the Moon are at right angle to each other. Average range of tides is higher in case of spring tides.
