  • Question 1

In geothermal plants, steam is raised by pumping cooler water into the layer of magma.
    Solution
The most common way of capturing the energy from geothermal sources is to tap into naturally occurring 'hydrothermal convection' systems, where cooler water seeps into Earth's crust, is heated up, and then rises to the surface. Once this heated water is forced to the surface, it is a relatively simple matter to capture that steam and use it to drive electric generators. Geothermal power plants drill their own holes into the rock to more effectively capture the steam.
    Hence, the statement is true.

Solar cell is a device which directly converts _______ into electric energy.
    Solution
Solar cell is a device which directly converts solar energy into electric energy.
A solar cell, or photovoltaic cell, is an electrical device that converts the energy of light(sun)  directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect. It is a form of photoelectric cell, defined as a device whose electrical characteristics, such as current, voltage, or resistance, vary when exposed to light. Solar cells are the building blocks of photovoltaic modules, otherwise known as solar panels.

The energy which cooks food in a box type solar cooker is :

    Solution
In the box type solar cooker, the light coming  from the sun is used to cook the food by concentrating light onto the food material.Hence light energy is being used here to cook food.
  • Question 4

The gas obtained from biomass for generating heat energy is :
    Solution
Bio-degradable material is kept for a long time inside a closed chamber in absence of oxygen, most of the organic matter is broken down into biogas which is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide in approximately three weeks. The biogas is collected in a spherical gas holder from the top of the biogas reactors. The gas produced by biomass is knows as biogas.
  • Question 5

Which is not the renewable source of energy?

    Solution
Wind, water, tides all can be used again and again. But, once natural gas is burnt, it can never be used again. It is in limited amounts on earth.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
The tidal power plants are constructed near the mouth of ................ bays.

    Solution
Tidal energy of sea waves is harnessed by constructing hydro electric dams at the mouth of narrow bays along the sea coast.
Hence, The tidal power plants are constructed near the mouth of narrow bays.

Coal is a renewable source of energy.
    Solution
The resources which are exhausted after continuous utilization are known as non-renewable resources. Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy. Coal is a fossil fuel formed over millions of years by the decay of land vegetation.
  • Question 8

The group of solar cells connected in a specific pattern to produce desired magnitude of electric current is called :
    Solution
Solar panel refers either to a photovoltaic module, a solar hot water panel or to a set of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules electrically connected and mounted on a supporting structure. A PV module is a packaged, connected assembly of solar cells. Solar panels can be used as a component of a larger photovoltaic system to generate and supply electricity in commercial and residential applications.
  • Question 9

The air pollution caused by the internal combustion engine vehicles can be reduced by using :
    Solution
    Answer is A.

Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons are released when fuel is burned in an internal combustion engine and when air/fuel residuals are emitted through the vehicle tailpipe. Gasoline vapors also escape into the atmosphere during refueling and when fuel vaporizes from engines and fuel systems caused by vehicle operation or hot weather.
The pollutants in vehicle emissions are known to damage lung tissue, and can lead to and aggravate respiratory diseases, such as asthma. Motor vehicle pollution also contributes to the formation of acid rain and adds to the greenhouse gases that cause climate change.
Pollutants emitted directly from vehicles are not the only cause for concern. On warm, sunny days, hydrocarbons react with oxides of nitrogen to create a secondary pollutant, ozone. In many urban areas, motor vehicles are the single largest contributor to ground-level ozone which is a common component of smog. Ozone causes coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, and can bring on permanent lung damage, making it a cause of crucial public health problems.
Hence, CNG gas is used to control the air pollution. Compressed natural gas, or CNG, is natural gas under pressure which remains clear, odorless, and non-corrosive. Although vehicles can use natural gas as either a liquid or a gas, most vehicles use the gaseous form compressed to high pressures.
  • Question 10

The wind energy is not dependable because :
    Solution

Wind-generated power is a variable resource, and the amount of electricity produced at any given point of time will depend on the wind speed, air density, and turbine characteristics (among other factors).

If wind speed is too low (less than about 2.5 m/s2.5 \ m/s) then the wind turbines will not be able to make electricity, and if it is too high (more than about 25 m/s25 \ m/s) the turbines will have to be shut down to avoid damage.
Hence,  as the wind does not blow all the time and the speed of the wind changes suddenly, wind energy is not dependable.
